Blog Types & Directory Merge

0

Hello.

I’m trying to created a “edublogs like” site with a different target, the users will be able to register a blog “domain/blog”. I will use the “blog types plugin” so the blog has a specific category, my questions are:

What is the best way to list these categories (Blog Types) in the global main page and the list looks similar to “Directory plugin”, but listing the blogs created?

Is there a way to list only the posts of a certain category, such as domain/directory/category/ and get all the blogs?

What do you recommend?

Cheers!

    Hiya uakami,

First off, welcome to WPMU DEV!

I know we’ve discussed this before on the forums, but I’m not sure what became of those conversations. The Blog Types plugin could use a little TLC that’s for sure.

What does everyone else think? Is this something you’d have use for? What other ideas, in addition to uakami’s would folks like to see on this?

    Thanks!

I just installed the plugin with hopes of being able to easily list all types in a directory view, as well as my backend (for audits).

    Wish list

    – Front page and backend listing by category (perhaps this is already available)

    – Ability to send out different mail message based on type (Using Messages Plugin)

    – Set different default theme based off of category

I would love any thoughts you had there. Thanks for your help!

I would love to be able to tag my blogs by type, and then produce separate directories by type — including NOT having a directory for one or more types. (The context is, we provide blogs for both individuals and groups. I want to be able to have a directory of group blogs, but not the individuals.)

    Hey,

Merry Xmas. As a new member I am liking it so fare. I really apprecite the easy to use site you have put together for all the plugins. Very well thought out and useable. Great job guys. : ) thx.

I too have some requests for the Blog Type plugin.

My site is a directory of consultants from all around the world. I want to make it easy for potential clients to find consultants based on the location and the services they offer. I think craigslist does a great job of this kind of thing.

So my request for the blog type plugin would be:

    BASIC FUNCTIONS

Top level category. Insert / Update / Delete Locations based on this type of directory: http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites.

Two levels of subcategories, all independant of each other so you could have one group of categories: consultant, potential client, and Recruiter. Then another groups of categories describing the service: such as marketing services, software services, legal.

This type of architecture would be very flexible and provide a webmaster with the ability to approach a broad range of users and bring them all together in one place.

    DISPLAY

    1. Displaying the results in a table of links of the first category locations. When user clicks through a table of

    2. A bread crumb trail with activated links displaying where users are in index hierarchy. Similar to craiglist would be great too.

    GREAT TO HAVE

Ability to upload a csv list of categories to make adding long lists of locations easy and fast.

    I hope this is useful.

    Thanks again and Merry Xmas,

    Dave

Here is a simple example of what I would like to put together directory wise:

    http://www.hwyblogs.com/blogs.php

Except the blogs would be hosted by me and have a global theme and content.

Nothing fancy. Just the ability to post pics with a few words and then show a list of their posts.

Also at the top of each of their blog posts would be an extended profile with a few fields and a sizeable picture.

Potential clients can then browse for consultants in their specific geographic location and see which ones have the latest posts etc.

I will be putting together a mock home page and blog page as an example.

    : )

    Hiya Dave,

Thanks for your feedback and insight into what you’re looking for. As Aaron said above, it’s on the agenda – just delayed (which is never fun) due to high demand for some other plugins.

We’ll keep this information in mind as we work towards providing a solution here.

Thanks again. Oh, and welcome to WPMU DEV!

I agree that we need to improve the blog types plugin to be able to easily display types in a nice way.

Although I doubt that the way we’d do it would be to integrate it with the directory one… different beasts I think!

I reckon we should push this up the priority list too… hopefuly it won’t be too painful.

Yes, this is what we need

Want to be able to list the blog types along with it’s blog avatar and the blog description.

As a BIG bonus it would be nice with stats on each blog (sort of toplists for each blog type)
