Several questions about multisite

Hi there,

I am launching a business about WordPress, and really, it seems that the multisite is the thing I was looking for several months. it will make the link between the different ideas that I would like to put in place for my clients. But I have some questions, and the superheroes of WPMUDEV seems to be the best persons to answer them. So, let's go.

1. Can I launch my multisite business (sell hostings to clients) with the bronze level of hosting ?

2. Can I upgrage when my clients list grows?

3. How can I manage different flat rates for my clients? For example: a hosting a $10/m with those plugins, and $20 if you add those ones?

4. Does my main site have to be on the network? Or can it be on a standalone installation?

5. If yes, must I install it as standalone, and then convert it on a multisite?

6. Premium plugin management: can premium plugin licenses be installed for the entire network? Or must be installed for each site one by one? For example: I have Elementor Pro. Do I have to install ONE license key for the whole network (as it is used to update the plugin automatically), or must I have to install a key per website?

7. Can Shipper Pro migrate a site from a standalone to a multisite (one site of the network, but not the main site of the network)?

8. How can I automate a maximum of things: a client's site creation (free or not), from a template site (same themes, same plugins…. Just as edublogs, apparently?

9. F he WPMUDEV Pro hostings, it says "starting at $1000 per month". Is there options or levels that can grow up the bill?

10. Let's say that I create several networks, with different plugins on each of them. Can I migrate a client's website (easily… automatically?) from one network to another if he wants to have more options/plugins?

Thanks a lot for your answers.

Best regards.

    Hi Julien

    1. Can I launch my multisite business (sell hostings to clients) with the bronze level of hosting ?

You can create single site and switch this installation to multisite at any level we offer.

Currently, you can’t resell I am afraid. You need to buy slot for each site separately and everything has to be under your account. There is no option to have reseller management right at the moment. So this will be a separate site for each user. Only possible solution is to offer you clients to buy subdomain in yourr multisite.

    2. Can I upgrage when my clients list grows?

Yes you can upgrade you plan at any point.

    3. How can I manage different flat rates for my clients? For example: a hosting a $10/m with those plugins, and $20 if you add those ones?

As said above there is now option at this point, you could use https://wpultimo.com/ for example and create separate price plans when user register site in your multisite.

    4. Does my main site have to be on the network? Or can it be on a standalone installation?

    5. If yes, must I install it as standalone, and then convert it on a multisite?

Main domain will be always a part of multisite and master domain. In multisite installation all sites are under one network and base on one database / one installation.

    6. Premium plugin management: can premium plugin licenses be installed for the entire network? Or must be installed for each site one by one? For example: I have Elementor Pro. Do I have to install ONE license key for the whole network (as it is used to update the plugin automatically), or must I have to install a key per website?

This depend of how plugin/theme author build product and how they policy looks like.

In some cases you can enable theme/plugin in network so all clients will be able to use it.

Other cases are that you will have to buy high level plan for theme/plugin to use for all sites in network.

From what Elementor FAQ page say:

    https://docs.elementor.com/article/192-do-i-need-a-license-for-my-subdomain

A license is required for each subdomain.

Their Expert plan cover 1,000 Sites. I will recommend to reach Elementor support and clarify this little bit more.

    7. Can Shipper Pro migrate a site from a standalone to a multisite (one site of the network, but not the main site of the network)?

At the moment Shipper offer migration from single to single and whole multisite to multisite.

However we have plans in future to support such cases as you say.

If you need to migrate single site to multisite I can recommend two options:

    1. use simple export/import tool in WordPress (export data from single, create subdomain in network and import data there)

    2. Use our Snapshot tool:

    – create backup of site

    – find this backup ZIP in /wp-content/uploads/snapshots/

    – create subdomain in network

    – put this ZIP file via ftp to /wp-content/uploads/snapshots/ in this multisite (note that both sites need to have Snapshot installed)

    – go to Snapshot -> import tab, click on bottom IMPORT button and this ZIP file will be imported to list of backups.

    – then this backup can be restore on any subdomain (via ID or name)

    8. How can I automate a maximum of things: a client’s site creation (free or not), from a template site (same themes, same plugins…. Just as edublogs, apparently?

Mentioned earlier https://wpultimo.com/ plugin should handle this request.

    10. Let's say that I create several networks, with different plugins on each of them. Can I migrate a client's website (easily... automatically?) from one network to another if he wants to have more options/plugins?

Answer for nr 7 should cover this one too

    As for nr 9:

    9. F he WPMUDEV Pro hostings, it says "starting at $1000 per month". Is there options or levels that can grow up the bill?

I will ping Ronnie Burt and James Farmer as they have more knowledge about Pro hostings.

Hi Julien – lots of good questions!

With respect to re-selling, you certainly can sell/invoice/charge your customers for sites however you like. We just don’t currently have a way to handle billing or payments for you, which is what Kris meant by no re-selling. Though you could look in to WP Ultima on our Partners page (http://wpmudev.org/partners).

All that being said, I’m curious as to your reasons for wanting everything to be on a multisite?

It is true, years ago, hosting client sites on a Multisite was often easier and more economical than managing individual sites. However, things have really changed.

For one, there are tools like our own Hub which allow for managing updates and running reports across 10s or even 1000s of sites.

Then, there are a lot more complexities around domain mapping than there used to be because of the need for SSL support.

You put these two things together, it may be better for you in the long run to not use Multisite at all and to have individual WordPress single sites for each site.

The only time a Multisite makes the most sense now is if all sites will always use the same base domain. For example mysitesnetwork.com/customer1 and mysitesnetwork.com/customer2, etc.

Does that all make sense? Or did you have something else you were wanting to use Multisite for?

    Hi Kris and Ronnie,

First of all, thanks a lot for all your answers. It lights me a lot.

Ronnie, to answer your question “why especially the multisite?”.

Well, because from several months, I was thinking about businesses around WordPress services: WP service care, hostings, and build pre-built solutions on WordPress (mainly oriented around the marketing and conversions topics). To build all this, it can be a hard work and a little tricky, when you start from scratch like me (I don’t talk about knowledge but launching the business).

That’s why multisite can help me to start. I think this is a good way to easily scale up the business from zero: I can install a multisite, sell premade solutions on it, with a little server to begin, and then scale it up when clients list grows. As I am alone for now, I am looking for to automate a maximum of things, as the site creation.

So, for me, it is a good way to automate lots of things, with a minimum of first investments.

For example, I’ve bought a server at Flywheel. Excellent server, excellent service (I can recommand). But to launch a business, that’s not so easy: I would have to buy a $100/m plan to be able to resell hostings, and get the multisite feature. Too expensive to launch a business, for me.

WPMUDEV hosting is easier on this side.

But the Domain Mapping seems to be tricky, according to what you say…

Thanks again for all, guys.

    Hello Julien ,

But the Domain Mapping seems to be tricky, according to what you say…

Right now it is not tricky but more “annoying” because every domain needs to be added to hosting panel manually – however from what we know WP Ultimo devs are doing some work in their plugin that would help with that issue (so it could be automatic in the future).

So I’m suggesting checking their plugin changelog in the future.

    kind regards,

    Kasia

    Hi Kasia,

    Thanks for your answer.

You’re right! I asked this question to WP Ultimo team, and yes, this is handled on some hosting providers, including WPMUDEV recently. That’s the good news!

I am looking at WP Ultimo very closely.

    Best regards,
