Can we use one wildcard on two different servers?

I have a domain and site which already has the wild card certificate installed on the existing server. I want to migrate just one main domain to WPMU HOST and keep all the subdomains on my old host. But I want that wild card to work when I point the main domain to WPMU HOST.

Is that possible?

    Hi Lee Walker

    I hope you’re well today!

    Yes, that should work.

You’d basically want to setup a regular single site on WPMU DEV Hosting (migrate your one site to it and so on).

If you already have your wildcard and wildcard certificate up and running on your other server, all you’d need to do would be to make some changes in the DNS:

    – the most common setup is that the main domain is using A record pointing to some IP and “wild-card” is set as * CNAME.

    – you’d just change that wild-card to use A record pointing to the original IP , instead of using CNAME and then point the main domain only to the WPMU DEV hosted site.

The certificate for the main domain would be Let’s Encrypt automatically generated and installed on our end, just like with any other standard single WP install on WPMU DEV Hosting. The sub-domain sites would still be using your wild-card cert that you got installed on that other server and they’d be served from your other server.

However, note please that this would work as long as you got full control over DNS and there are no strange “tricks” in original server configuration – like, for example, wild-card being set as a * sub-domain without any option to edit its DNS settings.

So the bottom line is: yes, it’s possible and not really complex as long as you can make changes to domain DNS and your other host does not require top-level domain to be pointed to them in order to handle sub-domains.

I would then suggest asking your host if they allow it, something like: “would I be able to keep working sub-domains/wild-card on this server if I point the top level domain to other server?”.

If they confirm, you should be good to go as WPMU DEV Hosting would handle it

    Best regards,
