[Uptime] Uptime should spread requests better

1

Some (cheap) hosting companies are really strict on how many requests an IP address can do in a specific amount of time. This can cause Uptime Monitor to falsely report a website being down, while it’s just it’s own IP address that is (temporarily) being blocked.

This can probably be largely avoided if every request from Uptime is done from a different IP address then the previous one. I know Uptime Monitor is using two IP addresses and it’s probably not preferred to add more, but it would largely solve these kind of problems as well.

      Hi Julian

      Thank you for your feedback!

On a side-note: usually it is possible to avoid that by allowing IP (even if they are not specifically blocked, do add them to “allow” lists) at all firewall – on site if there is any, at server level and in CDN such as CloudFlare, if used.

But yes – I think it would make sense to “spread” requests more among different IPs. I’m not really able to say at the moment when this is going to happen but we’ll keep this thread open and closely monitor incoming feedback so our Uptime/Hub Team would be aware of it.

      Best regards,
      Adam

    Hi Julian ,

Thanks for the update. If this is the case, you may have to contact your webhost. Explain the situation to them and ask if there’s anything they can do to stop blocking Uptime’s IPs. You can assure them that the frequent requests are necessary for monitoring your website’s uptime and not malicious in nature. If your webhost refuses to do so, you might have to consider changing webhosts if uptime monitoring is critical to your operations.

    Kind regards,
    Zafer

        Hi Julian

I understand that and I’m really sorry that this is affecting you.

It’s a bit strange that the host refuses to allow those IPs to bypass any restrictions even after getting full explanation but, unfortunately, it’s up to them and we can’t affect their decision.

Currently, there is no way to override that IP issue on our end as there are only the two IPs used and due to some technical aspects it’s not possible to simply “add more, just like that” – it would require additional development (changes on our end).

But as said, we understand the problem. I’m not really able to say at the moment what and when will be done about it but I can assure you that we’ve already passed this request and all the feedback to our Hub Team so they could consider future steps to improve this.

        Kind regards,
        Adam
