WP Daily<\/a> has just announced <\/a>that it\u2019s closing up shop and going away.<\/p>\n

In fact, it\u2019s already closed up shop. When you go to the home page, you get the following:<\/p>\n

Clicking on the questions link at the bottom takes you to a message that doesn\u2019t really give many details.\u00a0 The quotation below is as specific as they get.<\/p>\n

We achieved every single goal and metric that we had set out to accomplish (and then some) in this glorious experiment and so we consider it a \u201csuccess.\u201d But,\u00a0it did not achieve the much larger global goals and strategy of our organization at this present time.<\/p>\n

Consequently, we\u2019ve pulled the plug.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There\u2019s been a lot of talk about WordPress news sites lately \u2013 essentially about how most of them seem to fail. (For the record, it\u2019s not really fair to say that WP Daily \u201cfailed.\u201d \u00a0We don\u2019t really know all the details.)<\/p>\n

Of course we\u2019ve had our part in these conversations, talking about the demise of the WordPress Planet<\/a>, \u00a0an attempt to make a new WordPress Planet, and whether WordPress news sites are worth paying for<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This latest news from WP Daily (which seemed to have many fans) only serves to reinforce the hard realities making a WordPress news site work. And so once again it raises the questions: What\u2019s the solution? What models can work?<\/p>\n

WPMU.org\u2019s model obviously works. We\u2019re backed by the revenue from WPMU DEV<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But is there another model? \u00a0\u2026 Any ideas? … And what’s the REAL reason WP Daily closed up shop?
