In a complicated and overcrowded online world, it\u2019s refreshing to see a clean and simple site that gets the message across. These minimalist WordPress themes can help make your website one of them.<\/p>\n

\u201cLess is More.\u201d \u201cClean and crisp lines.\u201d \u201cUtilizing white space.\u201d \u201cSimple, yet elegant.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

These are just a few common phrases that might come to mind when most people think of minimalism.<\/p>\n

Another priceless saying I\u2019d add would be:<\/p>\n

\u201cKeep It Simple Silly!\u201d (KISS)<\/h2>\n

Because minimalist web design is so much more than the look of a site.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s making navigation a breeze for the user, it\u2019s limiting confusion and overwhelm as much as possible, it\u2019s providing a better user experience.<\/p>\n

Which brings me to today\u2019s article…<\/p>\n

We\u2019re reviewing different minimalist WordPress themes and judging each – not just by their cover – but by how they make life easier for both front and back-end users.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve also taken the time to test out each theme and see how it operates inside of WordPress. So don\u2019t expect any adjective ridden descriptions that were clearly copied straight from the themes website. We\u2019re all about that hype-free life.<\/p>\n

Oh, and one last thing:<\/p>\n

All Of These Themes Are 100% Free, And You Can Install Them On Your WordPress Site Immediately<\/h2>\n

So let\u2019s not delay.<\/p>\n

1.Minimalist Blogger [SuperbThemes]<\/a><\/h3>\n

As you\u2019d guess by the name, out of the box Minimalist Blogger<\/a>\u00a0suits anyone running a simple blog.<\/p>\n

Right off the bat, MB comes with a helpful theme homepage<\/a> packed with plenty of documentation and FAQs to help you get started.<\/p>\n

Even though themes aren\u2019t usually too difficult to get your head around, it\u2019s a great addition for beginners who might need extra help.<\/p>\n

When we get into customizing the theme in WordPress<\/a>, Minimalist Blogger comes with all the adjustments you\u2019d expect.<\/p>\n

Features like changing the title, tagline, and logo you want displayed. You can also adjust the colors of your site, add a header image, choose which menus you want to display, and add widgets.<\/p>\n

*These are all standard features for theme customization\u2026 so for the rest of this article I\u2019ll only point out added functionalities that differ from the expected.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another handy feature is the small shortcut icons that let you instantly edit a particular section of your site.<\/p>\n

As shown in the example screenshot below, clicking on one of these icons allows you to adjust your site title and tagline immediately.<\/p>\n

While nothing major, it\u2019s a great example of a simple feature that creates a better user experience.<\/a><\/p>\n

Overall, this theme is simple (duh!), but it still gives you enough functionality and features to create your own bloggers paradise.<\/p>\n

The help and documentation pages were also a nice touch, and could be really useful for those new to the big bad world of WordPress.<\/p>\n

If you fall in love with this theme and find yourself wanting more, you can also upgrade to the paid version<\/a> to add more features and functionality.<\/p>\n

2.Author [Ben Sibley]<\/a><\/h3>\n

According to the WordPress.org theme page: Author<\/a> is a theme made for its namesake.<\/p>\n

Its layout supposedly promotes readability, and the theme is best suited for simple blogs, magazines, or news sites. It also comes with complete WooCommerce support and is fully compatible with our friend Gutenberg.<\/p>\n

But enough with the hype, let\u2019s see how it all goes down in WP.<\/p>\n

After activating the theme, you\u2019re immediately taken to the \u201cAuthor Dashboard\u201d which is a pleasant surprise.<\/p>\n

The dashboard<\/a> gives you access to everything from a getting started guide, to support sites, and the themes change log.<\/p>\n

The getting started guide is especially helpful, and details how to install and activate the theme. As well as the adjustments you can make, and what they each do.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Of course, the layout is clean and minimal (as you’d expect from the themes in this article). The sidebar also contrasts nicely with the central content of your site.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Looking at the customization options, all the usual suspects are available.<\/p>\n

Some added features include \u201cBlog\u201d which has useful settings like whether to display posts and comments in full, along with the length of post excerpts.<\/p>\n

You can also add a \u201cscroll to top arrow\u201d which is a small but helpful UX feature.<\/p>\n

Finally, with a name like \u201cAuthor\u201d it\u2019s no surprise you\u2019re given some writer \/ blogger focused features.<\/p>\n

For example, you can add a Gravatar to your site, as well as social, and contact links.<\/p>\n

Overall, this theme provides an easy and simple way for bloggers and writers to get their content out to the world.<\/p>\n

The author-specific features are also a fitting and useful touch. As well as the way the theme introduces users to its functionalities.<\/p>\n

This shows how much they care about user experience and satisfaction (thumbs up Author!).<\/p>\n

3.Wilson [Anders Nor\u00e9n]<\/a><\/h3>\n

It\u2019s going to be extremely hard for me to resist making Cast Away<\/a> references while talking about this theme, so bear with me.<\/p>\n

WILSOOONNN!<\/a> (that\u2019s the last one I promise)\u2026 Is a simple and responsive theme made for personal sites and blogs.<\/p>\n

According to the theme page, it comes with responsive design, retina ready assets, block editor \/ Gutenberg support, and more.<\/p>\n

But before we get to how it operates inside of WordPress, Wilson doesn\u2019t appear to offer much in the way of documentation.<\/p>\n

It does however, have an active (used within the last year) support forum<\/a> that you can reach if you need help.<\/p>\n

When we get into the customization options of this theme, everything is stock standard.<\/p>\n

But look harder and you\u2019ll find some more features that make this option different to the other themes on this list so far.<\/p>\n

First there\u2019s the widgets section of the customizer.<\/p>\n

This is something I haven\u2019t covered yet, only because most themes offer the same widgets.<\/p>\n

But Wilson does have custom widgets which are useful in certain scenarios.<\/p>\n

For example, the theme offers a custom video widget, as well as a Flickr widget (shown below), which might come in handy for you photography bloggers out there.<\/p>\n

Overall, I\u2019m a fan of this themes look (and name!) and it boasts some useful features we haven\u2019t seen on this list so far.<\/p>\n

It could do with some more documentation and guidance, however, you do have access to the WP.org support forum if you need it.<\/p>\n

4.WP Diary [Mystery Themes]<\/a><\/h3>\n

In its own words, WP Diary<\/a> is a WordPress theme that\u2019ll fit perfectly with a blog, portfolio or news magazine website.<\/p>\n

It looks the part offering a modern and stylish design, and is easy to customize and mould to your liking.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what they say anyway, let\u2019s find out what this theme is all about for ourselves.<\/p>\n

The theme\u2019s homepage gives you a good overview of what you can expect, and (hooray!) we have a help \/ documentation page<\/a> we can visit if needed.<\/p>\n

The docs are basic, but informative at the same time. And if you\u2019re having any troubles with the theme, all you need to know is on this page.<\/p>\n

When we move into WP, straight away we\u2019re greeted with a \u201cWelcome Page.\u201d This page gives you the lowdown on the theme, along with some quick navigation links to different pieces of content.<\/p>\n

For example, from here you can navigate straight to support or documentation. Which is what was lacking in the previous theme. A superior UX<\/a> can make all the difference, people!<\/p>\n

When we hit the customization stage, there are some unique features worth noting.<\/p>\n

First we can add\u00a0a slider, which is a creative way to show off your content.<\/p>\n

There are also some \u201cAdditional Features\u201d such as the ability to add social buttons to your header, along with the \u201cPrettyphoto\u201d setting which lets you \u2018beautify\u2019 your images and give them some extra pizzazz.<\/p>\n

Another great feature is the \u201cDesign Settings,\u201d where you can change the layout of your posts and pages.<\/p>\n

Overall, this theme delivers on its promise of a stylish and modern layout.<\/p>\n

I also like that it saves users time by offering easy navigation, and it comes with plenty of customization so you can mould the theme to your liking.<\/p>\n

5. Retro Blog [WPInterface]<\/a><\/h3>\n

Not gonna lie, the main reason I picked this last theme is because it looks so darn trendy!<\/p>\n

But looks aren\u2019t everything, so let\u2019s give it a fair review like the rest.<\/p>\n

According to the theme makers, Retro Blog<\/a>\u00a0suits influencers and infopreneurs, and aims to highlight your content with its crisp typography and retro styling.<\/p>\n

When you first activate the theme you\u2019re prompted to visit the theme page, where again, (yay!) you have some helpful documentation if needed.<\/p>\n

The docs aren\u2019t overly sufficient, but the information provided is only what\u2019s necessary.<\/p>\n

When we get to WordPress, the theme comes with the stock-standard customization options, along with some intriguing \u201cRetro Blog Options.\u201d<\/p>\n

As seen below, these options allow you to add a banner slider, change the layout of your pages\/posts, and more.<\/p>\n

But the customization options aren\u2019t the strongest point of this theme, and it\u2019s the theme\u2019s built in style and retro feel that sets it apart from other options.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

To sum up, this theme definitely packs the documentation and help. However, it lacks slightly in the customization department.<\/p>\n

But in my opinion (take it with a grain of salt), the style, typography, and retro feel of the theme make up for the lack of customization.<\/p>\n

Besides, if you fall for this theme like I did, you can always upgrade to the pro version<\/a> where you\u2019ll have more features than you can handle.<\/p>\n

A Minimalist Theme Can Go A Long Way<\/h2>\n

The reality is, a simple and clean (and free) website theme is just as impactful as an expensive or \u201cedgy\u201d one.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s most important is your intended message gets across with as little friction as possible.<\/a><\/p>\n

Hopefully this article has inspired you to test some of the minimalist themes mentioned in this list for yourself.<\/p>\n

Or who knows, maybe you\u2019ll be inspired to start incorporating minimalistic design into other aspects of your work or life.<\/p>\n

In any case, after spending some time around these themes, I\u2019ve concluded a great minimalistic site typically has the following qualities:<\/p>\n

  1. It\u2019s simple, modern, and tasteful in the way it\u2019s designed.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  2. It features plenty of help, support, or documentation.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  3. It\u2019s provides a great user experience and is easily customized.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  4. It looks RAD, without being overly complicated.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
