When I was a kid, I ran a lemonade stand where I would sell lemonade for 50 cents. \u00a0Easy money. \u00a0Everyone likes lemonade and everyone likes kids. \u00a0But I remember distinctly running into my first business problem.<\/p>\n

There was one guy who only had a twenty dollar bill. \u00a0I had $11.50 \u00a0in takings and he would need $19.50 in change. \u00a0What to do? \u00a0Well, in that case, get my dad. In the big bad world of e-commerce, though, \u00a0taking payments is still one of the most aggravating of problems for the merchant.<\/p>\n

There are a few excellent payment gateways that have come along and made it easier for people in the US to take payments like Stripe<\/a>, Dwolla<\/a>, and WePay<\/a>. \u00a0What are the options for the non-US merchant<\/a>, though? \u00a0What can they use to take payment?<\/p>\n

Not PayPal<\/h2>\n

The obvious answer is, was, and I worry always will be, PayPal<\/a>. \u00a0Although there are any number of\u00a0people who dislike PayPal<\/a>, it is still a payment portal that is widely supported, affordable to use, and familiar to customers. \u00a0It should always be treated as a viable, if unenviable, option.<\/p>\n

In this post, though, I will direct you to some other payment processing options that are available. \u00a0I have grouped them by country and continent to make it easier for you to pick out one that applies to your situation. \u00a0 There are a few rules that determine inclusion or exclusion from the list:<\/p>\n

  1. I consider a payment portal to work in a country if the merchant can accept payments while living in that country<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  2. If your customers can make payments in a country, but you cannot accept payments in that country,\u00a0I will not include it<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  3. If you can receive payments in a country, but not in your currency, I will still include it<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  4. If it has a WordPress plugin, I will include it<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  5. If it offers a payment gateway that can be used with a shopping cart that can be used with WordPress, I will include it<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  6. I will not include<\/strong> a payment gateway that is only available to US-based merchants<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
    Please feel free to correct me if any of these are wrong; there is a lot of information to juggle and it is not just possible, but probable, that I got something wrong. \u00a0I’ll update the article to correct any mistake or include any omissions as I become aware of them. \u00a0 My emphasis here is on trying to make this as \u00a0accurate a resource as possible. \u00a0 The list after the ad…<\/div>\n

    These are the options that work in most places. \u00a0There will be holes in any network, but these work in most major markets. \u00a0If you don’t see a country specific one (I’m looking at you, Turkey) then check out these as your next best options:<\/p>\n
