Automate not working properly.

Automate is not working properly in a site of mine. I have enabled it in January but it hasn’t updated my plugins, there’s still plugins in there waiting for an update. I haven’t received any emails about any failed updates/backups as well. Please advice.

No, it didn't run. It didn't run on verily.lovekanroad.com or peoplestheatredenver.org either, but I updated those manually.

Automate has been active on peoplestheatredenver.org for weeks and has never run, or at least never appeared to. There's nothing in my Hub log (attached) since the 15th of January, nor have I ever gotten an email.

    Hi Greg,

I just checked Automate for your staging site and the strange thing is that it just shows that the start time has just moved to today, without any previous tries actually happening.

I have forwarded all the info I gathered to our developers and sysadmins so they can investigate this further and see what’s going on.

We will update you here as soon as we have some further information.

    Best regards,

    Predrag

Thanks. Please let me know if it will be a while before the developers can look into it — I don’t want to leave a bunch of outdated plugins on my server for too long. In fact I may update everything except the WPMUDEV plugins manually – presumably that shouldn’t interfere with the diagnosis process.

    Hi Greg,

I’ve included as much as info as possible to the report and hopefully that will help with finding the solution faster.

Since the issue can be replicated on your staging site you can keep your production sites up to date by manually updating from WP updates page and your staging site should be enough for devs to find the cause of this.

    Hi Predrag,

I’m not sure if you’ve been working on this but I received my first emails ever from Automate, so it seems that it’s now working on Verily and the testing site. However, I still haven’t gotten anything from peoplestheatredenver.org, which had a bunch of updates today and yesterday. I manually updated it but was there something specific that you did to get it working on the other sites?

    Hi Greg,

I don’t see that the devs made any changes regarding this but I can indeed see in the logs that Automate was fired up on all of your sites, even on the peoplestheatredenver but for that it shown that there were 0 updates available.

I will still ping devs to see if they made any changes on your or our end.

Can you let us know when there’s a new update available on peoplestheatredenver but don’t perform the manual update, I would like to check the logs while there are pending updates on the site?

    Best regards,

    Predrag

    Hi Predrag,

Okay it looks like Automate is working now, I’ve activated it on almost all of my sites and it seems to be doing okay, save for a couple that haven’t had any updates yet…

…Except for one issue – It finally did work on peoplestheatredenver.org, but even though it says it created a backup successfully, the backups tab is telling me that a backup hasn’t been performed recently. I have no idea what the issue is, especially given that it’s working find on the staging site that is an exact copy, as well as on dreamingsinfronteras.com which is using the same theme and mostly the same plugins. But in any case, that’s the only remaining issue so far.

Yes, managed backups are enabled. The schedule is disabled but the key is in there and everything. In the Hub under the Automate tab, it says that a full backup was created on Feb 23 before it ran the updates, but that backup does not show up in the managed backups section of the plugin on the website, nor in the backups tab on the Hub.

    Hello Greg!

Logs for the peoplestheatredenver.org site indeed indicate that there’s no up to date backup from Automate. Last update was performed on Feb 23rd when the iThemes Security plugin was updated and since then there was no plugins to be updated – so no backups would be preformed.

However, even on Feb 23rd it shows that the last backup was started on Jan 31st and last existing backup is from… Feb 13th so that doesn’t seem to be proper.

On dreamingsinfronteras.com those dates in logs are consistent and suggest that Automate backups worked fine there.

That being said, I assume that either that backup wasn’t actually fully completed on the peoplestheatredenver.org or it couldn’t be (or failed during) properly uploaded to our cloud. If you manually run (“once off” Managed Backup on that site, does it complete successfully?

Would you mind enabling support access to that site (the live one, where it fails) so I could take another look at it? To do so, please go to the “WPMU DEV -> Support” page, click on “Grant Support Access” button there and let me know here when it’s open.

    Best regards,

    Adam

Okay I granted access. I will try doing a once off managed backup but I do have it doing scheduled snapshots that it uploads to Google Drive, and those are working just fine.

On another note, I don’t want to schedule managed backups on any of my sites because I have them doing scheduled snapshots to Google Drive, but Automate keeps setting the schedule to “weekly at 6pm,” even after I go in and turn off the schedule. Is that supposed to happen?

Okay Automate seems to be working across the board now… I’ll let you know if there are other issues. It’s still annoying that it keeps activating the backup schedule though. If I turn off the schedule it means I want it turned off.

In any case I’ll mark this resolved for now.
