Buddypress Forum Customization/Enhancement

Hello there

I searched through the forums as well as Google and didn’t really find anything addressing my questions so I thought I’d start a new thread and see if I can get some clarifications.

I (and a few others) recently decided to relaunch our website using BuddyPress. Originally we were using WordPress and an integrated bbpress install. Our goal is and has always been to provide an opportunity for social networking around a common area of interest and while WordPress and bbpress were all right they had huge limitations in my opinion. We move things over to BuddyPress because it’s got so much more functionality in terms of creating an online social networking space. That being said less than a week into things, I’m really starting to feel the lack of customization options with the BuddyPress forum.

So I guess my question is basically this.

Is there any way to add bbpress forums to BuddyPress so that I can get some of my old forum enhancements back? Specifically I’m interested in things like the ability to display video as well as have some sort of writing tool enhancement, be it BB codes or some sort of WYSIWYG solution. Of course it would also be nice to have the ability to upload files in the forum area.

Anyhow any thoughts and/or advice regarding my question would greatly be appreciated.

did you mean the buddypress built in bbpress?

the problem are within bp core..

i think someone ticket that enhancement for bp 1.2 (not released yet)

if not, try submit one at bp site before the initial 1.2 release.

will see if the new bp had features like BBcode, insert img and vids and of

coz the WYSIWYG editor for the one click bbpress forum install.

Agreed..the default built in bbpress in bp are lack of some of this features compared to the standalone BBpress..coz most user prefer standalone bbpress

rather than the built in one…in some cases:slight_smile:

Oh I didnt even really realize that the stand alone was an option.

What is involved in going the the seprate instal rout and is it easy (or even possible) to do this with exisiting bbpress and BP instnals? I my case some users have aoocunts on both instals would this be a problem?

    Last thing…..

So how is that BP has set up the forums in such a limited way?

Oh and just to be clear you are basically saying that there is no (easyish) way to get BBpress plug-ins to work with BP forums right?

What is involved in going the separate install rout and is it easy (or even possible) to do this with existing bbpress and BP installs? I my case some users have accounts on both installs would this be a problem?

    Hiya,

Just integrate the standalone install to with WPMU so that user accounts are shared and there won’t be a problem.

So how is that BP has set up the forums in such a limited way?

BP just uses bbPress as a backend forum solution. Nothing you see on the frontend is actually bbPress. Therefor none of the bbPress plugin hooks, etc work the same way.

Correct. Existing bbPress plugins have to be modified to work with BP. From what I’ve been told it’s not a simple task.

    Thanks,
