BuddyPress Friendly text editor

No idea if this has been suggested before but BP sure needs an text editing plugin . There are a couple out there bur frankly none them really seem to do the job or if they do, in the process of do ing it they break something else on the site.

Idealy something that would work across all of BP.

well this subject is a real reason of war !!!!

There are 2 in the plugin base of buddypress, but at this time not really fully operational fkc editor and bp tinymce but they create many other problem.

This point is a reason to leave buddypress and look forward to symposium…

Symposium is a nice looking alternative but it isn’t without issues of its own. Especially if one is looking to move from an existing BP install. Last time I checked there was no way to import from BP. Then there is the fact that it’s pretty much a one man show with regard to development and that just makes nervous for a whole host reasons.

As an UPDATE to my original post:

So if (as Aphrodite suggests) an advanced editor is too problematic to peruse at this time, what about some kind of bbCode plugin?

    I could live with that!!

What do you WPMU Dev’s think? A reasonable idea? Some thing you guy’s would be willing to peruse?

It is obviously a greatly needed feature. In fact I bet that offering any sort of stable text editing option would be a big draw in terms of generating interest in WPMUDev from the BP community.

    Hi Guys

I am gonna bump my question because no one has responded yet and it has been a month.

respectfully, it’s a little disheartening at this point that it seems I am more likely to get a response to a question on the BP and/or WP forums.

Hi Avi, given the huge popularity of facebook, the plain editor is likely to become even more favored, though I’ve seen quite a few requests for a facebook-like pulling of externally linked content.

That said, I think the bbcodes idea is a good one and keeps with the simplicity of the plain editor.

Of course, everybody seems to be on the bandwagon of a WSYWIG editor the likes of FCKeditor or CLeditor. While they are modern, they always come with problems. I encounter them because developers want to through them in as eye-candy, but more often than not, they don’t work well (the examples above as case in point).

What about editors that use simple markup. Markdown is one, the Markitup is another. Both of these are far more robust, but simple enough to cut down on plugin/javascript/theme conflicts. While they lack the true WSYWIG ability, they work and people are generally comfortable with them. These forums here use a markup instead of WYSWIG.

But it doesn’t cover groups and activity. It only works for forums, which is a similar problem that has been the issue with other plugins. Everyone is focusing on the forums and neglecting the activity/group text areas.

Not everyone wants to use the built-in BBPress forums (for me, they don’t fit my scheme of how things should work). Basic groups and activity are an interesting format worth supporting (Facebook Wall for example). Getting that kind of functionality to them would be something worthwhile.

Well that’s not an issue of it not working correctly but I get what you mean.

To be honest I actually like it that way because it encourages people to post things to the forums. While, I like that members can post updates I don’t see them as beaning as useful (to the overall community) as the forums are and so anything that encourages forum use adapts is a good thing imo.

However, obviously of communities have different needs and so the plugin (I guess) would be more robust if the option was there to activate the plugin on different parts of BP. For example things like updates and PMs.

But again with all of that being said it does work great on the forums at least.
