Bulk Smush large number of images.

When I run bulk smush sometimes it will run for a few hours, and stop. It will say got about 5,000 images done, but then when I clear it and refresh the amount, it really has only gotten about 2000. Is this typical, and how many images per hour should it really be completing? I guess it is possible that my site is adding more images at the time, but the stats change downwards too.

    Hi Ben,

Let me explain first how the Smush optimization process works.
When you start image optimization it will send your images to our servers where the optimization is performed, after it’s done it will send it back to your site and replace the original, unoptimized, image.

While I was checking your site, navigating through your admin section, especially going through media library and checking images, was really slow.
This means that sending and fetching images will be affected as well and prolong the overall process.
In addition to that, you also have broken thumbnails on your installation, on the screenshot shared in chat I can see that there are some 300×300 thumbnails broken and when I check couple of random images I could see that some of the 300×300 thumbnails are indeed broken and unable to be loaded.
So Smush will try “harder” to fetch those images until it makes sure that the images are not available and that will also then affect the time needed for the optimization process.

There are no images per hour specific speed that Smush works by as it depends on a lot of factors, like the number of thumbnails registered, image size, server speed etc, and the server speed and broken thumbnails are some of the things that are slowing down the process on your site.

As for the stats shown, note that the overall stats on top of the Smush page are different from the images shown that need Smushing.
The number of images that can be optimized will show number of media library items that can be optimized while to overall stats show total number of images that have been optimized, including thumbnails.
For example, let’s say that you have 10 images in media library that can be optimized and your WP site creates 4 thumbnails, this means that one image has 5 instances, one full size and 4 thumbnails.
So if you go and optimize those 10 images the overall stats will show 50 optimized images.

To get back on the issue on hand, in order to improve the optimization process you should start by checking the broken thumbnails, why they are added, and how can it be avoided.
As a quick fix you could try using a plugin like Regenerate Thumbnails which should be able to rebuild those broken thumbnails so Smush can fetch them.

This might be enough to get the process to finish properly since it will reduce the number of requests on your server and will speed up the process.

Let us know how it goes.

    Best regards,
    Predrag

Ok, this all makes sense, however, I am still confused on one thing.

On the left under the tab there is a black out number of say 5618. But then on the image compression bar below to the right it has 21k or so. Why is there a difference here? What is the number in black? I have noticed that when the number in black hits zero, I still have images showing up that can be smushed and have to start over.

    Hi Ben,

That numbers should be the same indeed, I wanted to check your site further to see what might be causing this but the site is down at the moment I’m afraid.

Can you check with your hosting provider about this and once it’s back online regrant support access and let us know here so we can have a look?

    Best regards,
    Predrag
