Can’t install Defender through Hub

I’m trying to install Defender through the Hub but the system failed to install it. Getting “Destination Folder” exist error where Defender Pro isn’t in my site plugins list. All my sites are going through this.

    Hi Robert Stewart ,

Hope you are doing good today.

The issue was due to improper install, the Defender plugin folder was partially present on the server-side, under /wp-content/plugins directory.

I had to remove the plugin folder /wp-defender and then re-tried to install the plugin via the Hub, and it worked fine without any issue.

Please do check, and let us know if you have any further query. Have a nice day ahead.

    Regards,
    Nithin

That doesn’t really answer the question. I installed Defender on multiple sites on our shared IP and now 70% of them are showing on the wpmudev.org Dashboard as “green” and active, but when I log into the site, the plugin doesn’t appear in the list of plugins, and when I try to install it, it says “The Destination folder already exists”.

Why would ONLY the defender plugin be missing files? There is something amiss here. Also, we’ve been having security issues with our server around the same time that defender has “gone missing”. I’m wondering if there is a coorelation?

    Hi Robert Stewart ,

Seemed like the issue initially was only for Arthurdoors.com website. Thanks for pointing it out, I could notice as you have mentioned.

It’s odd that the icon is green, but if you check the section it shows the plugin is not installed.

I tested on my install to see whether I could replicate but it works fine in every possible way. Could we know are all the websites hosted in the same server? Are there any automated services to update plugins etc? Maybe the issue occurred after updating the plugin? Do you recall any such actions with these websites?

Could you please share the WP admin login, and FTP for at least these two sites so that we could check further regarding this:

    abcinsfin.com
    504kids.com

Also, it looks like all of the plugins were disabled on ArthurDoors.com. I assume you did that, but please confirm.

No. I haven’t disabled any of the plugins. Only deleted the Defender folder as mentioned in the initial reply and re-installed it via Hub.

The main question is why is the status showing as green on YOUR dashboard, but the plugins are not installed and working properly on the sites?

Since this occurred for more than one website. We’ll need to troubleshoot further to see what could be causing this. Please do share the FTP and WP admin credentials of the websites where the issue still exists so that we could check this extensively.

I just created a new ticket and added the information that you requested. Our FTP is shut down at this point… so there’s no point in giving you access.

I’m just trying to find out what’s going on. You’re system is flawed or there’s a bigger issue. I know that I installed Defender on all of our sites, but for some reason, they are being deactivated, but the folders are still there and your HUB is showing that they are still installed and activated?

Has this happened to you before?

Basically, every site that says it’s installed has the Defender folder in the plugins folders, but I guess it’s missing some files because it’s not showing up in the WordPress backend. But then if I try to install and activate it again through the HUB or the back end of the site, I get a “Destination Folder Already Exists”?

Is there an issue with updating your plugins, or do you think this is a malicious attempt at disabling security on our sites? We’ve been having some security issues lately, and I’m just trying to rule out that this is related…

    Thoughts?

To update this ticket. I’ve gone through and deleted the old Defender plugin folders and reinstalled the plugins on all of the sites on the HUB Dashboard. Now, I’m going to wait and see if any of them go “missing” between now and Monday.

Please leave this ticket open until this matter is resolved.

    Hi Robert Stewart ,

Is there an issue with updating your plugins, or do you think this is a malicious attempt at disabling security on our sites? We’ve been having some security issues lately, and I’m just trying to rule out that this is related…

Such issues noticed on your side haven’t been reported before, and it’s odd behaviour. There haven’t been any issues in general with updating the plugins reported by other members, nor I could replicate any such issues with Defender or any other plugins.

We cannot rule out malware too, so please make sure to re-scan the site via Defender where you have re-installed the plugin and see whether you notice any such issues? Also, please double-check via Online Scanner too:
    https://sitecheck.sucuri.net/

If it’s a Single Server where all these websites are hosted, would highly recommend double-checking with your Hosting provider to ensure the server is clean from malware.

Also could you please update regarding my initial question raised in the previous reply? ie the following one:

Could we know are all the websites hosted in the same server? Are there any automated services to update plugins etc? Maybe the issue occurred after updating the plugin? Do you recall any such actions with these websites?

Now, I’m going to wait and see if any of them go “missing” between now and Monday.

Sure, please let us know how that goes. So that we could check further if needed.

    Regards,
    Nithin
