Communities plugin problem…

I installed the communities plugin earlier today and have been trying to play around with it… from the admin account I can see the different communities and can write, post, respond… on all of them. I then made a subscriber account to see if it was all working correctly… I can do a search and see the communities but I can not join any of them… when I click “join” it say’s “you have joined “xyz” community but when I go to the communities tab it still says “You currently are not a member of a community.” I created a community to see if I could join it on the admin user but I ran into the same problem… Also, as the subscriber user I can not see any of the pages, boards, wiki, or news… all the pages are blank… but as the admin user I see them all…

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks!

“when I click “join” it say’s “you have joined “xyz” community but when I go to the communities tab it still says “You currently are not a member of a community.”

Did you approve your membership of the new communities?

It does sound a little odd, I’d be interested to know if any other premium users have experienced this issue (or if its worked form them).

What version of wpmu are you running?

I’d be interested to know if any other premium users have experienced this issue (or if its worked form them).

I’m running MU 2.7.1 and did not have this membership approval problem, however I did encounter two other issues …

    1. The message system appears to be broken for me. When I click any “send message” link (as admin or a member) in the community, I am redirected to a 404 Not Found page of the blog from which the community is being viewed.

    2. As the MU site admin I was able to create a News Item, but as a member blogger I could only view news in that community. Is that how it’s supposed to work. Is the News section “read only” for anyone other than the member who created the community?

My only other concern is that no communities are visible under “Find Communities”, a user must search for a community. This could easily cause duplicate communities if people don’t search, or their search does not return a relevant community. A list of existing non-private communities would be ideal!

One more thing … after creating the first news item in a community I created, I was no longer able to add any additional news items.

Only after navigating back to “Manage Communities” did I discover the “Manage News” link. If this is the only place to add new news items, it could be a bit confusing to those who think news should be added from within the community.

    Hiya,

    Hiya,

I’ll look into this one this week.

News can only be added/edited by the community owner.

Only after navigating back to “Manage Communities” did I discover the “Manage News” link. If this is the only place to add new news items, it could be a bit confusing to those who think news should be added from within the community.

I’ll see about placing a link to the Mange News page. However, I won’t be adding the ability to add/edit news from any other page.

    Thanks,

    Andrew

Disregard my “only other concern” comment … I see now that existing communites are listed when members click on Communities

I retract my disregarded comment  For new members who click on the communities link, none are listed. I was seeing one I had joined. It would be nice to have a list or drop down menu of existing communities available to join so users don’t create similar communities.

Thanks for your clarification about the news and looking nt othe messaging.

Have you uploaded the file to wp-admin? I often forget to do this

Yup. The plugin otherwise seems to be functioning fine. I’ve created a community, joined it (as another member), added messages, news and a Wiki page.

The “send message” feature is the only hiccup. It throws a 404.

Any further thought about adding a list of existing public communities to the Communities tab for new members looking to join a community without searching for communities?

I think that the next release of the communities tool would most likley be a big one too, or quite a variation, if we’re going to be adding public facing communities and integrating supporter features too that’s a couple of weeks work just there

So yeh, I think it’ll take a while.

Sounds like it would be well worth the wait, thank you!

While you’re at it, you might consider letting any member of a community add or edit wiki pages, as in the traditional sense of a wiki. From what I can tell, no member can contribute to a community wiki unless they have been extended moderator status. Perhaps moderators could retain the power to remove pages, but all members could contribute to the wiki. Just a thought …

Notice James said *if*. I’m still on the fence about that one. I mean, if someone wants everything to be on the frontend they might as well go with BuddyPress.

Although I have been working with BuddyPress lately and I have to admit that it is super clunky at this point :disappointed:

    Thanks,

    Andrew
