Custom Google Search bar not showing up in mobile theme.

I’m currently using jetpack to create the mobile version of my site, but alas, the custom google search bar on the front page doesn’t show up when you visit the site via mobile (though everything else works just fine). I’m not sure where to begin in resolving this (other than not using jetpack). I’m using the BlogsMU theme. Any help? or is this a known incompatibility?

    hi @xbladerunner,

It’s not a known compatibility issue, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a compatibility issue, just that it’s never been reported before.

Does it work when using the default twentyfourteen theme? just so we can eliminate a theme issue.

What settings are you using in jetpack? so I can try and replicate on my site.

    Thanks.

    Thanks Vaughan,

Doesn’t work using twentyfourteen theme. I have 5 jetpack modules active: enhanced distribution, mobile theme, monitor, subscriptions, and wordpress stats.

The error (missing custom google search bar) shows up on the front page when viewed in the mobile theme. Shows fine using non mobile theme.

    Hiya @xbladerunner,

    Hope you're well today!

Just tried to check this for you, but once I'm logged in, on the admin side, I keep getting a database connection error (Screenshot attached).

Is your host currently having any issues?

    Thanks!

    Kind Regards

    Jack.

    Thanks Jack,

Haven’t had any other notifications of problems, and just logged in to the admin side with no issues (this is 4 hours after you posted, however, so can’t speak to what might have been going on earlier today — though jetpack usually sends me a notice if the site is down, and I didn’t get any notice of that). Please try again

    Hi @xbladerunner,

I have tested your site on mobile using the service http://mobiletest.me/ and found the Custom Google Search is displaying fine as shown in the attached screenshot.

Then i found information about the jetpack mobile theme that the Mobile theme will only display on a mobile operating system, so to see it in action, i’ll need to visit your site from a smartphone.

It seems jetpack mobile theme is restricting access of somethings like following.

    http://jetpack.me/support/getting-started-with-jetpack/known-issues/

I will test it on smartphone shortly and troubleshoot it.

Is it not displaying for you on specific mobile device or on all mobile devices?

    Regards,

    Vinod Dalvi

    Thanks Vinod,

I have yet to see the search bar ever show up on a mobile phone (unless I hit the “view full site” link, which returns the image you have above) — but I’ve only tested iphones using safari or chrome. I can test android later tonight. Shows up fine on ipads (but doesn’t use the mobile theme there, so wouldn’t expect an issue).

    Hi there @xbladerunner,

Hope you’re well today! I’ve tested your site on a Android phone as well and can confirm it doesn’t show.

This definitely seems to be a incompatibility with jetpack, as it completely hides the Google Custom search, I’ll notify the lead developer of the plugin to see if there’s anything we can do here.

    Thanks!

    Kind Regards

    Jack.

    Hey @xbladerunner

I think the first question is, what are you using to display the search form on the page? If its hardcoded in template there is no way jetpack will respect that as it is using completely different theme.

    this is my solution:

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/search-shortcode/

Plugin is replacing default search form and this lets you place default search form everywhere you want with shortcode

Actually, it might be wise to build in something like this into next release:slight_smile:

    Thanks,

    Maniu

ps. @Vinod Dalvi there are nice chrome/ff extension that lets you easily change user agent in your browser so the site will think you are on mobile:slight_smile:
