Do self-hosted blogs have short codes?

I often use the [display-posts] shortcode but now I have moved to a self hosted blog I find it is not available. The JetPack seems to have some shortcodes but I am concerned that it might be evil. What are the alternatives to get shortcode functionality in my self hosted blog.
