[Domains] Make “premium” domains transferable or publish clear criteria and an alternative path

0

I tried to transfer a domain into WPMU DEV for a client and the transfer was blocked as a “premium domain.” The docs say premium domains are not transferable, but they do not define what “premium” means, which TLDs are affected, who sets that status, or whether any exceptions exist. This creates avoidable friction for resellers who consolidate domains for clients.

Please either enable incoming transfers for premium domains where the registry allows it, or publish clear criteria for what counts as premium by TLD, including who decides and the pricing or transfer implications. Also surface transfer eligibility in the UI and API at search and during the transfer flow, and provide an alternative path if transfers truly cannot be supported.

This prevents failed migrations and embarrasment as resellers, helps us sell appropriately, and keeps more domains and revenue with WPMU DEV. I can share the specific case if helpful.

Thanks, Patrick. Yeah, I’m in quite a predicement as I had purchased a .art domain (supported TLD here on WPMU Dev) for a client with the intention of transferring it into their account here, but at no point was it indicated this would be a limitation. So everything lives in one place.

Just makes it tough for us as resellers when we’re not able to accurately sell something, and then we have to backpedal on the situation.

And of course we want to position the platform well against competitors to be able to handle these sorts of things.

    Hi Enrique Cantillo ,

We have further feedback from the team. I am afraid the .art TLD falls under the category where registration and transfer both have premium pricing, thus they can’t be transferred to us at the moment.

We have already shared your concern with the project manager for further review. An improvement related to this is already included in the plan, but at this stage, we are not able to provide a specific timeline for when it will be available.

    Best Regards,
    Nebu John
