Feature Request: Flexible Server Up- & Downgrades

4

Dear WPMU Team,

hope you’re doing well! 🙂

We’re approaching 2026. When will you provide us with the ability to scale our servers up and down with ease? Competitors already make it simple and elegant to switch between CPU, memory, storage, and server types (Basic, General Purpose, or CPU Optimized).

We often face the challenge that clients need more performance during certain events (Black Friday, Christmas, New Year, etc.), and we need an easier way to deliver that. While upgrading with WPMU is incredibly simple, the downgrade afterwards is a nightmare (copying the server, creating a new server, DNS changes and often something in WordPress breaks because licensed plugins suddenly stop working).

Please give us something truly useful in this direction and don’t reject it again with the reasoning that it’s technically not possible. That would be fantastic!

    Hi Karen I.

Trust you are doing well today, and thank you for sharing your feedback regarding our hosting.

Since each plan uses a different server IP address, downgrading is not possible without changing the IP, and that will require updating the DNS. Some hosting providers have created special shared servers with scalable resources; however, these are not the same as our hosting plan, which offers dedicated resources rather than shared ones.

I will bring your suggestions to our team’s attention, but I can’t give you any promises or an ETA. I hope we can extend our hosting features in the future.

Downscaling was possible in the beginnen using WPMUDEV hosting that was based on DigitalOcean, after WPMUDEV switching to Vultr you only can scale up, to scale down you need to setup a new hosting account and restore a backup.

It also would help us to have an option to “put a website into fridge”, a way to park sites without high hosting monthly costs for projects that are on hold.

    Hi Vicky and Julian

    Hope you’re well.

As explained by my colleague earlier, due to infrastructure limitations, automatic downgrade or downsizing is trickier to handle. However, we have already passed along your request to the hosting team for a thorough evaluation. By gaining more support from members like you, there is a better chance that this feature will be given greater importance. Kindly note, however, there is no specific detail regarding ETA as of this moment that can be shared.

Regarding your question here Vicky , unfortunately, this isn’t possible at the moment. We have the Suspend option available, but since the site is practically still there, occupying the server will incur charges. I have, however, I have passed your suggestion to the responsible team internally

Thank you for contributing to the improvement of our services.

    Best Regards

Unfortunately, it’s always the same reasons why we don’t get this capability: “technically not feasible” and “we’ll forward your request.”

No offense, I’m just trying to give fair feedback but competitors have been able to scale up and down with DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, and many other server services for a long time, whenever it’s needed or not. I believe modern cloud hosting should have this as a standard, which would also allow going beyond the current 24 vCPU limit.

    Hi Karen I. ,

We understand; however, I’m afraid the limitations are on the upstream provider’s side rather than ours. Could you let us know which hosting provider you noticed uses Vultr and offers one-click downgrades, so we can get a better idea of its implementation and check for possible improvements?

    Regards,

As a web developer with over 20 years in the industry and more than 8 years as a WPMUDEV member, I’ve worked with many hosting providers over the years — GoDaddy, SiteGround, HostGator, InMotion, and others. I ultimately chose to stay with WPMUDEV because they offer the most complete reseller package I’ve found, along with excellent tools, plugins, and overall support. From a hosting perspective, I’ve been genuinely happy with the quality and pricing, especially considering this is premium WordPress hosting with dedicated resources.

That said, I completely agree with the points raised in this thread. I’ve actually lost some clients because I can’t offer the type of shared, scalable hosting they were looking for. Sure, I could manage everything manually using external providers, but then I lose the centralized customer portal and the unified, white‑labeled experience that I’ve built as their main provider. Splitting services across different platforms breaks that consistency. Having WPMUDEV offer shared hosting tiers would allow us to keep everything under one umbrella and manage all clients from a single Hub, which would be a huge advantage.

Rather than only expanding the capabilities of the current dedicated infrastructure, I’d love to see WPMUDEV introduce additional hosting architectures alongside the existing plans. Having a cloud‑based shared hosting option with scalable resources — similar to what competitors offer — would be incredibly valuable. It would allow us to provide more flexible and affordable plans to clients, especially for projects that don’t require dedicated resources.

I recently revisited the new A2 Hosting offering (now Hosting.com), and I really like the interface and the range of services they provide. Their shared hosting plans offer generous resources and easy scalability at competitive prices compared to providers like SiteGround and GoDaddy. Having something comparable within the WPMUDEV ecosystem would be a huge win for agencies and resellers.

I hope this is something the team considers for the future — it would fill an important gap and give us more options to serve different types of clients effectively.

We currently have plans in development regarding this, but it is too early to provide specific details at the moment, and I’m afraid there isn’t any exact ETA. We recommend keeping an eye on our roadmap for future updates.
