Feedback on BuddyPress – Magazine

I really think the theme has potential, and have a site where it would definitely make the content ‘pop’.

The problem though is that the colors and graphics are so over the top that I found myself unsure where to start to make changes. I wish there was a “basic” color scheme, without the splatter graphics and neon colors. Without that, I think many will be find it too much work to visualize how the theme can be customized and just move on.

@carinallc: if you turn on the default style under preset styles you can see it without the background the pink is still there but it could help you maybe? That or using the mono theme could show you as that is without the neon

@carinallc: By colour wheel what do you mean I had a look didn’t see the option on the site (could be I missed it) if you mean under theme options behind the themes there is on Magazine if you select default.css you can pick literally any colour using a colour picker. Sorry if I’ve got the wrong end of the stick though.

@tlister: no worries, I decided to spend more time with the theme and come back with a better perspective because I really love what you all do

What I should have said/meant was a glossary of sorts that visually shows where all of the options get applied. I think the direction taken of minimizing the effort necessary to customize the site is good. But without knowing where H1, H2 are applied, I’m using multiple monitors to hunt my way through what each option does, you know? I’ve been using WPMU & BuddyPress for about 6 months now and still get confused when I see “Member Wrapper Background Colour”

Regardless, I’m sticking to it – WPMUORG has by far been the best investment we’ve made in WordPress-related resources!

I’m really thrilled with this theme. I think my biggest wish would be to perhaps have a bit more control of the images. Most magazine themes use a post custom field to hold an image file name to use for this purpose. Because I’ve already flagged an image in a dozen or so articles on my site, I’m going to look into the code surrounding the image selection.

That said, I think the whole logic and code surrounding the image selection is one of pure genius. You’ve made it so easy to flip a switch and have a site that a client will be completely blown away by. You rock.

@hollysuso: You can do that by selecting the default.css style and then using the settings under the theme options.

@raymondmannion: Unfortunately as it does use the new method the only way to get custom images showing would be to use the parent / child format and copy say home.php or any page you want to show custom fields and enter those yourself (as in the code to show them). You can easily do that with a little of php knowhow though. It’s designed to not have custom fields therefore there are no calls to any.
