Forums? A misnomer or a missed opportunity perhaps?

Just settling in to my new luxury membership, saying hello and hoping for a conversation. I just wish my first post were not accompanied by a vague sense of ‘What the heck…?”

The first plugin I have used is Forums. But by what stretch of the imagination did it get that name? From what I can see this is really a front end post editor, and could be hugely useful as such, if it actually did that for all posts.

But as a forum… ? No access controls, notifications, moderation, threading, this looks more like a thinly disguised comment manager rather than a forum.

Please tell me that I am missing something.

    Hiya,

Forums is designed as a more simple, effective and embeddable alternative to bbPress.

There’s not much point doing a more fully featured plugin as bbPress already does that and the upcoming release of bbPress will allow other plugins to hook into and extend it further.

Thanks Phil. I’ve been looking at the bbpress schedule, guess I will join the queue for that. I wanted to get away from the table-based, single forum approach of SimplePress, especially for a new multisite community, although it works well enough on some single sites.

Perhaps there is a future for the Forums plugin as a front end post editor, this is certainly something I would find interesting because I have users who are reluctant to use even the highly simplified back end interface.
