General Plugin activation questions

Can I please ask 2 generic WP multi-site plugin questions:

1. Can a plugin be made available for admin use only from the admin homesite dashboard and not network wide? (some og the plugins on here for example I would use for site set up but not want available for network wide distribution.

2. I am confused by the network activate function! I have previously activated new plugins from the admin network dashboard but some have not appeared on the plugin list on the admins homesite. I am not seeing any other activation choices other than network activate or deactivate. Is that right?

    Hello David,

    Glad you posted these questions!

The deal with Multisite and Multisite plugins is some are available to be activated on a site by site basis and some are not.

For example, if you have a plugin like our Membership plugin. It is meant to create membership rules that are specific to each site on the network, meaning it will show up on each plugin list in each site. If you use another plugin, say Global Footer, then that will only be shown on the Network Admin Plugin menu as, when network activated, it controls content on all sites. It is meant to be controlled by the network settings, not by each site owner.

I hope that helps a bit.

As for restricting use, you can find some plugins that will help with that like this:

We do offer a great Mutisite plugin that allows you to do this and create payment levels for it if you like.

Check it out, let me know what you think or if you have any more questions!

    Best,

    Kimberly

Thank you, that does kinda make sense.

I have downloaded that pro plug in and looking at it.

So what is the deal with Directory please? On another site I have downloaded installed and network activated the plugin through network admin.

But when I switch to the homesite it doesn’t appear in the plugins at all. I can not seem to get this available to use.

Nothing in the plugins list but just seen a subheading of listing. Strange It isn’t in the plugins thou.

When I went to access listings it told me I didn’t have rights although I am admin. But let me in on second attempt.

This is one of those plugins I will need to hide from the rest of the network

Thanks for all that. I will see how I get along with it.

    regards
