Why not use YouTube or Vimeo for background videos!

No true autoplay – Browsers block autoplay with sound.
Branding & UI elements – Unwanted logos, buttons, or overlays.
Slower loading – Not optimized for background playback.
Limited control – No control over quality, looping, mute, etc.
Privacy concerns – Injects tracking scripts, requires consent.

Why use a CDN or self-hosted video!
Fast loading – Optimized delivery via edge servers.
Full control – Autoplay, mute, loop, and styling.
No distractions – Clean, no third-party branding.
Better compatibility – Serve multiple formats for all devices.
Privacy-friendly – No cookies or external scripts.

Hi, Sam. I appreciate your response and can relate to your concerns.

Automatically playing audio of any kind on a website is generally considered an undesirable practice … most users find it off putting and a reason to leave a website before ever looking at anything. This is why the browsers have moved to blocking audio playback until a user has somehow approved it.

Both YouTube and Vimeo actually deploy via CDN, and have frankly mastered performability in the industry.

You should have no difficulty deploying video playback with autoplay, loop and styling. See: https://waypoint.care. This is one of our client sites. No branding from the vendor.

For many of the reasons you’ve stated, our business has selected Vimeo as our video deployment platform. We are very happy with the results.

        I hope this is helpful.

        Thanks,

        Art

    Hi Sam van de Wal

Trust you are doing well today.

Implementing a CDN for videos could be a useful feature, alongside other WPMUDEV CDNs; however, it won’t be an easy task.

As Art Smith pointed out, there are several good video streaming platforms available on the market that have been established for a few years.

I have created a feature request task for you, but I cannot promise any specific timelines or guarantees regarding the implementation.

    Best Regards,
    Amin

      Hi Amin,

Thanks for your response and for creating the feature request much appreciated.

While platforms like YouTube and Vimeo are indeed well-established, they’re not ideal for background video use. There are several key reasons why serving videos directly via a CDN would be beneficial:

Faster load times through optimized delivery.
Full control over autoplay, mute, loop, and styling.
No branding or overlays that distract from design.
Improved compatibility by serving multiple formats.
Better privacy — no tracking scripts or cookie banners required.

For background videos especially, performance and control are critical and that’s something third-party platforms just can’t offer.

I understand it’s not a trivial task, but I believe it would be a valuable addition alongside your existing CDN features.

      Thanks again for considering this.

      Best regards,
      Sam van de Wal
