How to install letsencrypt on mulitsite with subdirectories

Hi, I want to secure my multisite with letsencrypt. I use subdirectories not subdomains. I have a Ubuntu 16, apache, php 7.0. I use your plugin Domain mapping. Is it possible to do this with my setup?

Hello Hubbe,

With subdirectories, you need only “basic” Let’s Encrypt – because there is no need to have wildcard certificate (wildcard certificate is needed when using subdomain Multisite).

As for the Domain Mapping – if you wish to have mapped domains on SSL also, you will need to have separate certificates for those domains.

Have more questions

So I just install letsencrypt and then I do

sudo certbot –apache -d example.com -d http://www.example.com

Is there no need to have virtual hosts in sites-enabled?

I tried

sudo certbot –apache -d example.com -d http://www.example.com with my mapped domain instead of example.com and certbot did not find anything to do

When you use mulitsite domain mapping there is no need for virtual hosts

You would need to add vhost for mapped domains. See here:

Also to try

sudo certbot --apache -d example.com -d www.example.com

Instead of

sudo certbot --apache -d example.com -d http://www.example.com

Hi

I finally managed to install letsencrypt on the mainsite and a subsite

I change in domain mapping plugin so the domain is https and it works

But the main site still I can access either as https och http

If I want to force https only on the main site how do I do that?

I tried to load your multisite main site under HTTPS and it’s not opening. So I’m not sure if the SSL Certificate was configured properly for your network main site. Can you please check that?

When that’s done, you can either redirect your HTTP traffic to HTTPS with .htaccess by following this tutorial: https://serverguy.com/servers/redirect-http-to-https/

Or, the permanent way will be changing your multisite primary domain URL to HTTPS version. You can do that by following this guide: https://wpengine.com/support/how-to-change-a-multi-site-primary-domain/

I checked the hubblog.se site with HTTPS last time and it was not opening. I checked again now and it’s loading fine with HTTPS.

I tried this in .htaccess in /var/www

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^hubblog.se [NC]

RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} 80

RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://www.hubblog.se/$1 [R,L]

but it does not work

any ideas?

Note, make sure you are using the www version for your websites.

In the alternative, you can give a try on the Really Simple SSL plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/really-simple-ssl/

How are you?

I can see you are using our Domain Mapping plugin, you can also force the https on Domain Mapping settings for mapped domains.

[attachments are only viewable by logged-in members]

Remember to have the domains added on your server, and the SSL generated, also make sure when mapped the domains add them using the HTTPS option.

My question is about the main domain hubblog.se not the subsites

Is not your last answer about all domains?

Or is it just for the main doman hubblog.se?

The latest is for mapped sites,

Please, try to use the htaccess redirect that I sent you for the main site, but as it doesn’t specify the domain and use the {HTTP_HOST} instead, I believe will work fine for subsites as well.

I got it to work by putting the code at the top in the .htacces file

probably the other rules for wordpress multisite did something with it when it was last i in .htaccess

Hi again

Redirect to https://hubblog.se works now but only main site works

if I go to admin or to a link in site ie https://hubblog.se/urltopage or https://hubblog.se/admin the page cannot be found.

http://hubblog.se/urltopage still works if I dont redirect to https

Any ideas on this?

Hello Hubbe ,

Have you updated all the URLs in your site to HTTPS? Like Home, Site URL in the settings. There is plugin that allows for search and replace https://wordpress.org/plugins/search-and-replace/

If you are forcing HTTPS you need to also update your URLs.

(make sure that you have backup of the site before doing any changes)

Maybe this can help, if you place the DNS in CloudFlare you get SSL cert for your mapped domain within the multisite, simple and straight forward. In some cases you need to set up SSL to Flexible within Cloudflare
