inconsistent use of domain url in domain mapping plugin

In the video below you will see that a mapped domain changed the url to site of the base domain for that site.

cngi.info is the subsite url, cngi.mobi is mapped to the site.

each hover over the admin links show in the status bar the cngi.info domain as the base of the url until it gets to "visit site" then it changes to the first mapped domain. This is not correct.

    Hello Lee

I hope you’re well today and thank you for your question!

In a sub-site dashboard on the “Tools -> Domain Mapping” page (where you add the mapped domain) there’s a “Front end redirect should be” option and the front-end behavior depends on the setting there. It looks like it’s currently set to the “Disabled and entered domain should be used” which means that the front-end will load via both domains, depending on which one a user put in browser address bar.

As for the back-end, on “Network Admin -> Settings -> Domain Mapping” the “Administration Mapping” is currently set to the “domain entered by the user”. This won’t “force” usage of any domain but the back-end would “by default” use the original domain. I’m not actually sure about the front-end link but there’s one more thing that would be worth addressing:

you are currently using “double mapping” – both core WP domain mapping and the Domain Mapping plugin at the same time.

The core WP mapping only allows you to map one domain and has some limitations (e.g. doesn’t provide single-sign-on, doesn’t let you exclude some pages from mapping and so on) but it’s perfectly fine to use it if you actually don’t need these additional features. However, Domain Mapping was never designed to work “on top” of the core mapping (which was actually implemented in WordPress long after the plugin was created). With Domain Mapping the sub-site shouldn’t originally use a top level domain but either sub-domain or sub-folder of the main multisite domain (depending on whether it’s a sub-domain or sub-folder setup). Then multiple domains can be mapped via the Domain Mapping plugin.

    Best regards,

    Adam

    Hi Lee

I’ve tested it and you’re right – it’s not. It’s keeping the “mapped domain” for the “View site” link regardless of the settings. It seems there’s some “glitch” in that so I’ve reported it to our developers already as a bug and they’ll look into it.

    Kind regards,

    Adam
