Multiple IP addresses accross multiple Servers

Hello,

I am trying to use WPMU as a single CMS for multiple sites that are related to each other. For SEO reasons, the sites are hosted on different servers. I know how to use the Domain Mapping plugin for multiple domains on the same server but I need guidelines for setting up multiple IPs which belong to different servers (i.e. how to setup DNS for each domain). The servers setup is CPanel/WHM.

i.e.

main site is on server 1 (one IP)

another site is on server 2 (different IP)

another site is on server 3 (yet another IP)

Can anyone help please?

Thank you.

I really think separate regular wp installs would be a better solution. WPMu is more designed for a single install where you add sites to it, not a management program for multiple sites scattered across different servers.

There is a management program for wp out there. I’m going out the door though to play volunteer. I’ll have to go did for it when I come back.

It’s generally understood in the SEO community that two sites located on the same IP address will be considered to either be the same site or held by the same owner by the search bots. They won;t give the same amount of “juice” between such sites when compared to like linking from a Typepad site to a edublogs one. I believe this has been confirmed by Google staff.

With Google it’s also been discussed that they have extended this to look within a Class C block of IP addresses when determining the amount of credit a link gets to a site. That I believe has not been confirmed by anyone at Google but it;s also been held as being true.

I politely point out that that article is discussing a different concept: That all sites need to be on different IP addresses instead of allowing for combining them via virtual hosting.

Matt’s article doesn’t discuss links to different sites within the same IP address or the same class c. In fact if you read the comments, Matt is asked that any time over but fails to respond. He does respond either to the number of requests where he’s asked about “incorrectly setup hosts” as well.

Summed up pretty well with the last sentence: “Links to virtually hosted domains are treated the same as links to domains on dedicated IP addresses.”

drmike, I don’t want to hijack this thread; that said, I think the concepts are, if not identical, then very closely related; because link juice is a primary component of SEO, and would be one of the primary reasons for setting up individual IP addresses for sites rather than combining them with virtual hosts on a single server.

Back to the thread at hand; I am investigating multiple IP addresses with a single WPMU install; not for SEO purposes but in order to use HTTPS for individual blogs. But I am not having much luck. Any possibility of that working?
