Reducing plugins for MU install

I must reduce the number of plugins on my WPMU server and was hoping you guys and gals might take a look at the massive list of plugins and let me know which plugins you know that just need to go ( exp: they are out of date or have caused you issues in the past, etc). Thanks so much for helping me with this massive project.

    Hi @joy,

    Hope you’re well.

You don’t need all those avatar plugins. I would keep the avatars plugin from wpmudev (yeah i’m biased there) Unless you have buddypress installed, in which case you can’t use our avatars plugin as it isn’t compatible.

    I don’t see Buddypress listed, but I see bp-group-management

bp-group-management isn’t compatible with latest bp anyway, so that should go.

Are these seperate plugins or the same? Do you need both if not?

You have a few stats plugins, might be best keeping just 1 of those.

Video player plugins could probably go, as latest wp supports many natively.

Basicly I would get rid of plugins that have pretty much similar features, I would also (though time consuming) search for each plugin in google or wordpress.org and make sure they are still being developed and work with latest wp. those that haven’t been updated in a long while will likely cause issues in future if they don’t already.

Those are a few I can think of.

    Hope this helps

Thanks Vaughan! Do you happen to know if I will ‘break’ anyone’s blog if I delete a video embed plugin that is active on their child site by chance? In thinking it through, it seems to me that deleting these old video plugins would not alter the appearance or functionality of the front end. It would alter the backend experience, but I can just contact users to tell them that they now simply paste the url into the page/post body to embed now if that is the case. If it breaks the front end then I need to contact users and give them a timeline to edit before I remove those plugins etc. Thanks!

    Hi @joy,

Yes, it’s probable, that it might break the videos on their front end.

I did write this little script, which you can use. It simply lists all plugins and themes that are active on each blog in the browser. so you can view what plugins are active on each blog. It might help you narrow a few down.

Unzip the attached file to your desktop. then upload the export2.php file to your public_html

Then simply call it with your browser http://domain.com/export2.php

It will not harm the site, it just lists the plugins/themes, but can’t wite or do anything else.

    Hope this helps
