Smush CDN not loading images on site

Smush CDN stops working on site when having Jetpack plugin active on it. It’s showing a white box on images with a grey outline.

    Hello Ryan

    I hope you’re well today!

I know that my colleague tried to replicate the “Jetpack <-> Smush CDN” conflict on his test site during the chat but with no luck. I tried that as well and as long as the “Speed up image load times” in Jetpack option is disabled, it’s working fine for me as well.

I checked the site and I can see that this option (as well as other optimization options in Jetpack) is disabled so there must be something in addition that’s interfering and I agree with my colleague that there’s a good chance that is the theme.

I noticed that there are quite a lot of optimization options in the theme and some additional settings for images so that suggests that the theme itself is interacting with the way that images are served and it’s possible that the conflict actually is “three way”: Jetpack + Smush + theme. Furthermore, the very strange thing is that there are absolutely correct references to images (images URLs) in the page source code and those images are being loaded when you try to preview them directly in browser console – so they are working but for some reason they are only not displayed.

That being said, I downloaded your theme from your site to check it with my setup. I noticed that it’s actually based on Impreza theme so I tested the case with both of them – Impreza and yours. In both cases I could only replicate the issue after importing theme settings from your site: enabling the theme, Smush CDN and JetPack itself was not sufficient to trigger the issue. But once I added settings from your site to mine, the issue (along with some other problems but those were only relevant to the content of my own site, so no relation here) immediately occurred.

Unfortunately, even despite trying to adjust options set in theme, I wasn’t able to “undo” that. There’s one additional “experiment” that I would really like to do if you don’t mind (or you can do it by yourself at the time that suits you most and just let me know here, I know that it’s a live site):

    – use Manage Options of the theme settings to backup theme settings (and make sure that this backup is safely stored so it wouldn’t be lost)

    – reset theme options and see if images got back even though both JetPack and Smush CDN are active

    – then restore the back-ed up options

It would be recommended to keep a full site backup additionally, just for safety.

This test would only be to confirm ultimately whether it is related to the theme settings. I’m 99% sure of it but my setup is much simpler than yours and since I wasn’t able to change theme settings to make it work so far (but I was able to replicate the issue only with settings imported from your site) I’d like to be 100% sure before digging deeper.

    Best regards,

    Adam
