[Smush Pro] Issue with CDN

Activating Smush CDN makes my site load extremely slow and produces 524 errors.

    Hello SABER

    I hope you’re well today!

I checked the site and Smush currently says that nearly 50 thousands images that might need re-compressing. That means that those images could be smaller (physically, in terms of file size) than they are currently – which would affect CDN and site performance as well. Have you tried to smush them and see what would results be?

Since it’s a live site I didn’t run bulk smush on it without your consent but I believe it’s worth giving a shot. Additionally though: there’s over 75 thousand images on site so with 17 image sizes registered on site it makes it over 1,2 million image files that need to be handled. That’s a lot and I admit Smush might have issues with that big number.

There’s going to be a release soon that’s supposed to improve handling of such large numbers of images significantly so it might be good to actually wait until the 3.4 release of the plugin and it might “automatically” solve the problem.

    Kind regards,
    Adam

    Hi Adam,

Thanks for the email. Yes, of course I have run Smush many many times. but its not smushing my images. Please You try on your end and see what kind of message you will get from smush when you try to smush my images. Please feel free to experiment on the site, we do have back ups nightly. Something is not right with the set up of Smush on my site.

    Upon Turning CDN:
Site crushes big time when I turn CDN
    Gives error 524 (server breakdown)
    Homepage gets distorted
    Homepage Slider does not display
Layout changes to a horrible look

    Please from your end:
Try to Smush images and wait to see what kind message you get
Trun on CDN (try to do it after hours early mornings when not many people are visiting site) and see what you get.
If messed up restore the last back up

    thanks
    Saber

    Hi Saber,

Try to Smush images and wait to see what kind message you get

Can you tell me what exactly is the error is that you are seeing?
I tried running Bulk Smush and I could only see errors like these:
[attachments are only viewable by logged-in members]
These errors are shown because those images are missing from the server so Smush can’t optimize them.
If you try to access one of the images directly from browser by going to /wp-content/uploads/2018/12/traffic-6003-cream-768×545.jpg you will see that the image is not there.
You can check your files via SFTP/SSH connection and re-upload them to get these images to be optimized as well.

Trun on CDN (try to do it after hours early mornings when not many people are visiting site) and see what you get.

I can see on your site that most of the storage is taken up by the debug.log, is it ok if we remove that before continuing with this test?
Also, is it ok if we pull fresh data to your staging site and do some further tests there?
We have Smush 3.4 beta ready so we could see there if this update fixes the issue.

    Best regards,
    Predrag

    Hi Predrag,

I am getting same warning as you. except that

Firstly I clicked on those images that says Not found but they are there in my Media file of the server.

secondly, I tried to Smush the images and after waiting for a Looooong time, the result was Zero images smushed.

Yes, you can get Fresh copy of site to Staging ( i was told by a support member that CDN will not work on Staging copy)

Yes, you can Debug ( as long as not affect my site in bad way)

Please feel free to do what it takes to speed up the load of the site.

mainly we have two areas which are really slow loading.

    1: homepage
2: Actual main product page (not the gallery of product but Actual product page, see below the two links)

    homepage:
    https://berkshirefurniture.com/
    (slow load)

    gallery of products:
    https://berkshirefurniture.com/
    (very slow load)

    term=&s=handstone+tables&post_type=product&taxonomy=product_cat
(ok load speed, not tooo bad)

    https://berkshirefurniture.com/product/catalina-dining-table/
(Actual product page very slow load)

    Thanks
    Saber

    Hi Saber,

Firstly I clicked on those images that says Not found but they are there in my Media file of the server.

I’m afraid that on your screenshots the reported images are not the ones that are on the screenshot form the media library.
If I check one of the reported images, for example traffic-6003-cream, there’s two uploads of that and one is broken:
[attachments are only viewable by logged-in members]
If you try to edit that image or access it from a direct URL you will also see it’s broken.
It’s still registered in database so it shows in the media library but the image itself is not accessible so Smush is unable to process it.

secondly, I tried to Smush the images and after waiting for a Looooong time, the result was Zero images smushed.

I further checked your library and it seems that the majority of your images are broken.
If you go to your media library and click on Smush column twice it will sort the images by unsorted ones, even on page 100 (out of 149) there are broken images.
So the number of 49.000 reported in Smush is most likely there because all of those images are broken and Smush can’t process them.

I would suggest sorting this out first before continuing with further debugging because the server will try “harder” to get those broken images and can cause all sorts of issues.

    Best regards,
    Predrag
