SSH cannot create a variable issue

I’m trying to use deploybot’s atomic sftp deployment.

But I’m getting forbidden syntax: BASE=”~/site/public_html/wp-content/uploads/theme-deploys.

Why can’t we create a variable inside the shell?

    Hello Delonn

    I hope you’re well today!

This is related to the limited shell access. The SSH account doesn’t give you a full “root” access and the set of things that can/cannot be done is limited due to security reasons. This applies to all the SSH accounts on WPMU DEV Hosting and I’m afraid at this moment tools that require this to be available cannot be used to deploy sites.

I’m aware that you’ve been asking about this a couple of times before but I’m afraid it’s not a bug/error that could be solved via chat or forum: it’s a purposeful shell limit on the hosting.

At this moment I’m not really able to tell you if (and if so, when) this will be changed but it’s been brought to our devops attention that such limitation can “break” some automatic deployment tools so they’ll consider it and see if they can (taking security reasons into account) allow it in future.

If you have any additional questions, please follow-up here instead of live chat (if possible) so we could keep all the conversation in one place, where I could also include our sys-admins if necessary

    Best regards,

    Adam
