Starting Out – Looking For Plugin Suggestions

So, I’m hoping that being new to WPMU isn’t going to be a negative for me but I’m sure it will be a challenge. I’m looking for a little advice to make our transition to MU an easy one.

We’re looking to build a small community on the WPMU platform. We’re specifically looking for the following features and I’d love to hear suggestions for the plugins we should use.

We’re looking for the following:

– Profiles

– Avatars

– Video Upload

– Podcast Upload

– Galleries

– Calendars

These are the core features we’re looking for and would love to hear from you on the best plugins to implement these features. Thanks in advance for the help.

I just wrote out this big long post with suggestions…

…and somehow we lose the cookie and get logged out.

Here’s the short version. Please forgive me.

    – Profile: http://www.visualguides.org/projects/profiler/ We’ve added in the recent comments output from the comment tracking plugin over at http://wpmudev.org as well as recent posts with our sitewide tags syetm.

    – Avatars: That’s one of the premium plugins.

    – Media Uploads: Allowed in wpmu. Dashboard -> Site Admin -> Options -> Filetypes allowed. We use this plugin to play the videos: http://www.daburna.de/blog/2006/12/13/wordpress-video-plugin/ Here’s info on Podcasting: http://codex.wordpress.org/Podcasting

    – Galleries: Built in: http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_the_gallery_shortcode

    – Calenders: Depends on what you;re trying to do with one.

    Hope this helps,

Isn’t that the way it always works. Thanks for the info and I’ll let you know how it goes. Obviously this is a learn as I go concern so this should be fun. Regarding the calendars, what we’d like to do is to allow each user to have a calendar, and an option to bring events into a larger overall calendar for the site. Would love the ability to have buttons that will add the event to a local calendar such as Outlook or iCal.

Of course, we’re going to be educating ourselves on how to properly setup this site before we actually roll live with the web site.

    @ weslinda,

Welcome to the forums here. I just wanted to let you know that although I’ve had several years implementing and hacking the standard WP, I’ve only been working with MU for a few months (for a site that has not yet gone live), and there are many great and helpful people here and on the standard MU forums that are willing to help.

I’ve learned so much from the community, and I’m sure you will too. Good luck with your venture and I’m sure I’ll be seeing you “around the water cooler”.

Haven’t touched the calender but I do recall on the mu forums a thread on working in Google’s calender system.

I’ve got on my todo list a reworking of the quota plugins within the Upgrade plugin to allow certain filetypes if one purchases an upgrade. Like how wp.com does theres. Image files only on basic sites, media files with upgrades.

Well, we’re certainly going to work on this project on a step by step basis. No rush, we want to roll this out as easily as we can. We’ll have a testing environment for all new features and then we’ll have our live environment for the real world. Thanks for the info and I’m sure I’ll be pinging on people here in a frequent manner as we roll this out. Like you, I have a fairly solid WP background, but definitely want to use MU and plugins built for MU. Should be fun.

Just keep in mind that they like to keep these forums targeted to support of their offerings.

There are some other resources out there for more advanced MU discussion though, as well as the main support forums.
