Suddenyl I can't log in to wp-admin anymore?!?!

I was working on my site yesterday without a problem. Tonight I can’t login. Every time I try to login, my login info just disappears, or it takes me to the default WP login screen where it shakes it’s head at my attempts. I know my password is correct, but, out of frustration, I clicked on the lost password link. I tried entering both my email address and username, but both times when I hit Enter, my info just disappears. Sometimes it will take me to my front end profile page, which shows no other info, not even my sidebar, and the gray tool bar at the top no longer shows up.

This is all in Firefox. I’m using the latest release of WP, 3.3, plus the Nelo 2.1.7 theme.

Then I tried in IE. I got right in!

I tried to troubleshoot. I made a new admin and then was able to log in with that new user in FF. When I went back to IE and clicked on something, it took me to my logout screen. And I couldn’t get back in.

I went back to FF and got as far as my blank front-end Profile page, and then copied in a backend URL directly and was able to get in.

When I go to my users page, I have myself, plus the new admin account, plus one subscriber (a friend of mine). When I click Edit on either the subscriber or the new admin account, it takes me to the regular user edit screen. When I click Edit on myself, it takes me to the blank front-end profile page. I was only able to enter into my regular user edit screen by editing the URL to enter in my user id.

Does anyone know why a perfectly functioning site would behave so strangely all of a sudden?

I have these plugins installed:

Author Avatars List

Contact Form 7

Dashboard: Last News

Executable PHP widget

Google Analytics Dashboard

Google XML Sitemaps

Jetpack by WordPress.com

Select Really Simple CAPTCHA

Select Theme My Login

Top 10

WPMU DEV Update Notifications

Please help!

I forgot to mention: Nelo has a built-in login widget. When I try logging in there, my info just disappears. However, because I have Theme My Login, I can also login there…and that’s when I am taken to my blank, front-end profile. And then, the only way into the backend is to paste in a backend URL.

Hey katypurviance, hope you are well.

    So when you try:

    domain.com/wp-login.php

    You get the same problem?

Have you tried clearing your browsers cache to check its not an issue there?

Does anyone know why a perfectly functioning site would behave so strangely all of a sudden?

When you say working on your site, what were you doing exactly when this happened?

If clearing your cache does not work, then temporally rename your plugins directory to anything, perhaps /old-plugins/ can you access the admin then?

    Take care.

    Yes and yes.

What I was doing (when I was working on my site) was putting some redirects in my host. I’m moving a blog from b2evolution to WP, which is no easy task, so I figured, instead of playing around with dangerous database stuff (which I am woefully ill-equipt to do), I would republish posts a few at a time, and use redirects from the old site to the new. I’m not sure how this would affect my ability to login to the new site, though.

Also, I mentioned above that my gray task bar no longer shows up when I manage to login (in my roundabout way mentioned above), though the Show Task Bar box is checked.

    Any ideas?

    Wow! That worked!

But then that makes all of my plugins “not exist.”

So then I went back and changed the name of my plugin directory back…

And now I can login normally, and my task bar is back!

Why did this work? What was the problem?

    Hi katypurviance

Sounds like some plugin conflict, or….. a cache issue somewhere.

Renaming the plugin directory simply deactivated all those plugins, allow you to test and make sure it wasn’t a plugin.

I suppose it could have prompted a clearing of the cache, as the page had changed thus the browser re-cached it. Just a guess here, its either that or some plugin conflict.

Glad it is all working for you now!

So when I began reactivating my plugins, it became pretty clear that it was a plugin issue. I tried reactivating them one at a time, and then logging out and seeing if I could log back in.

Reactivating certain plugins have created worse problems than I had before.

For example, All in One SEO plugin, when activated, gives me a blank white page. So I re-deactivated that one.

When I activate Top 10, I can login — it takes me right to my front end profile. There’s no gray task bar, but if I click over to my blog posts, then the task bar comes back, and I can get in the back end. So that plugin’s still a keeper.

Surprisingly, the WPMU Update Notification plugin also caused problems. When I activate that one, logout, and then try to log back in, now I only see my header. So I deactivated that one.

Really odd, this one works on all my installs.

I’m sure you said in other threads, but are you on the latest versions of WP and all plugins/themes?

It seems odd you keep having these issues. I’ve not heard from you since before Christmas but perhaps we can get together on Skype and go through your original issues. I wonder if they are in some way related to the ones in this thread also.

    Take care.

Yes, I have the latest 3.3 version of WP, and I always update my plugins whenever it says to.

Would you let me know a good time for you for Skype? I’m mostly free through the end of Saturday, and then I’ll be on the road for a while. Thanks!

Hey, I just noticed the same problem with the WPMU Update Notification plugin on another site. I upgraded to WP 3.3 and a lot of my important plugins no longer work. I’m going through each one, one at a time, to see what still works and what doesn’t.
