Suggestion: Import blog and be rewarded

0

It’s good to offer cool features if you want to get people to move their blog to your site. But if you, like me, run the supporter plugin you save the best for the supporters.

I think it would be real cool if there was a way to reward people who move their blogs to your site with X months of being a Supporter for free.

Actually, I think it would be good with a completely different signup page for people who want to move their blog to my site, with the import script right there on the signup page. If this was integrated with the Supporter plugin so that you can select for new users importing their blog to get free access for some time, that would probably be appealing. The new signup page would need to require the user to import blog at signup so that people doesn’t just sign up to get the free Supporter months.

So yeah, this is more of a suggestion *renaming thread*.

I agree. It would be good to have actions, similar to the way the welcome email works –

If a user creates a blog, they get + 30 days

If they import a blog, they get + 30 days

If they may their domain, they get + 30 days

If they get a new user to sign up (affiliates), they get + 1 day

If a user signs up and PAYS, they get + 30 days

    etc..

Anything that is supporter-enabled, should also be supporter-aware (so that actions can fire on their use).

Some of this will require a rewrite (giving credits on payment for signups), but it is the way people "assume" it works.

    Hiya,

Thanks for the input but I don’t imagine we’d be building a separate signup from as a feature for the the Supporter plugin. We’ll look into some of the other suggestions though.

    Thanks,

More ideas here, if you care to go to the blue side..

(I can give a more verbose rundown of how this could work if needed).

I don’t think the signup process needs to change, save for the ability to have someone become a supporter immediately after setting the name of the blog. I’m looking at a way to do this during registration so that the payment process can be started immediately.

What DOES need to change is the post-signup process (first login). First off on login they need to go to the dashboard, and not blog homepage. Second, It would be nice to be able to set up a workflow / checklist for a new member so that they know what steps they CAN take to get more free days.

Sort of like the way LinkedIn works (account 10% complete, fill out Education to get to 20%), but with specific settings around the dashboard (‘add your domain’ to get 30 days, ‘import your blog’ to get 30 days).

The ‘quoted’ text would be a link that brings up the field in question and prompts the user to fill it in. The text would then be updated with the next item in the list that needs to be completed for them to get all the freebies.

(more fun sample code, doubt its portable).

Profile fields? Custom table / sql? Not sure how feasible this is, but its on my list.

Thnaks for that, I’m definitely keen on anything that offers users incentives for participation and you;re quite right that LinkedIn does that very well with their % complete component.

Right now, what we’re considering, is a Wizard of sorts for new users… simplifying the getting started process… this could be a component of that.

But it’s not that high up the list right now

Maybe this could also be integrated with the affiliate plugin. If you invite a person that creates a blog you get +1 month of free supporter acceess. if that person becomes a supporter you get more months. Only avaliable to supporters, ofcourse. We wouldn’t want everyone to be supporters but nobody paying.

I suggest a feature so that this can be chosen to be by admin approval. That way admins can make sure it’s not abused, and everything have to be approved before supporter months are appointed. i.e. "Username(link to blog) imported his/her old blog – X months. Approve? Yes/No".

I like the supporter +1 month on new signups. You could give the existing supporters the option of cold hard cash, or +1 month (or just dispense with the cash part completely). Something like the online backup companies do "refer a friend, get 200mb extra storage) etc…

An other cool thing could be to give out invites, kind of like gmail in the beginning or Spotify right now.

When signing up you get X invites and the person you invite get X months of supporter access.

I guess the current user doesn’t benefit from it but he/she might invite friends that didn’t know about the cool features if it wasn’t for the invite. They can also invite people the "normal" referral way but the ones using the X supporter-invites will get some supporter months…
