[The Hub] Enable creation and deployment of ‘Template site’ to non-hosted WPMU DEV sites

1

Hello,

It would be helpful if it’s possible to create template sites not particularly hosted with WPMU DEV, and also the capability to deploy the same for sites on another hosting.

Relative to the template site, I am looking at; for example, being able to deploy Themes (including child themes) with preset settings on multiple websites in the hub including those that are on another hosting.

    Hi Giouxel Kasaika

    I hope you’re well today!

The template sites are quite specific feature and they are “tied” to the WPMU DEV hosting. Basically, they are pretty much just server-level backups, just “wrapped up” in an additional User Interface and “hooked” to site creation.

It isn’t as simple as it seems to make them work “out of the hosting” (neither deploy to WPMU DEV Hosted sites from 3rd-party location, nor the other way around). It seems like this would require a whole new tool to be developed.

But then, there is a built-in migration tool into our hosting so a case of “externally hosted” template site could be easily achieved this way:

    – create your template sites on any other/external host
    – use migration tool to migrate them into new sites created with us (this won’t delete those 3rd-party hosted sites)

I understand that this isn’t as simple as just selecting template site from catalog and deploying it “with a click” but at this point it would probably be the closest to what you need.

However, it does sound like a handy feature and let’s keep this ticket open to grab some feedback from other Members as well. I’m sure we can “think of something” if this is something that more Members want to have at hand :)

    Best regards,
    Adam

      Hi Giouxel Kasaika

I’m not sure what exactly do you mean by “promote the topic” but this topic is public and all Members can see it and vote for this feature if they find it useful. Our Project Managers are watching this space and if this idea gets more support from other Members they’ll surely see it and take into account.

However, we cannot promise anything at this point and we cannot “advertise” this request in any way. Other Members can already see it and if they are interested in it, they’ll surely will vote and/or post here.

      Kind regards,
      Adam

I mean when you try to update a plugin:
say an example custom plugin by me “Custom Plugin X”.
When I’m going to upload again the plugin for update the old one firstly i will generate a zip of that plugin (custom_plugin_x.zip) after that i will upload again the plugin via “add from URL” then will ask me to replace the old one with the new one for bulk or single site etc.
      Same logic for the theme.

    Hi Giouxel Kasaika

    Thank you for response!

There’s some misunderstanding here, I’m afraid.

    You described this process:

When I’m going to upload again the plugin for update the old one firstly i will generate a zip of that plugin (custom_plugin_x.zip) after that i will upload again the plugin via “add from URL” then will ask me to replace the old one with the new one for bulk or single site etc.

Themes already work the same way. You can download theme zip file, go to “Appearance -> Themes -> Add New” page, upload that theme zip file there and if the same theme is already on site WordPress will ask you if you want to replace it or not.

So it works that exact way for themes too.

But template sites are not themes

Theme on site and template site (as in Hub) are completely different things.

Template site is a full, ready to use website – entire WP install, with theme and plugins and sometimes even some example content. It’s more like “website installer” that installs ready to use and complete site.

It’s a different thing and shouldn’t be confused with WordPress themes.

    Kind regards,
    Adam

    HI Giouxel Kasaika

Bulk updates of themes from the Hub? No, there is no such feature currently. There’s only update for plugins.

But please note: you started this ticket about template sites. Now you’re asking about themes and those are completely different and separate things.

If you want to suggest a feature for bulk-installing/updating themes from the Hub, please start a separate feature request ticket.

    Kind regards,
    Adam

        Hi Giouxel Kasaika

You will add this feature? if yes how long will take?

I’m not able to tell you that. Feature request tickets are only suggestions and there’s no guarantee that such requested feature will be added or when it will be added.

The way it works is that you post a feature request and it’s a suggestion. Other Members can also respond to share their feedback and thoughts on that and they can vote for it and the more feedback and votes there is, the bigger the chance such feature will be added.

        Kind regards,
        Adam
