[The Hub] New clients already hosted on WPMUDev

Something that just occurred to me is what happens when a client approaches us and they already happen to be a WPMUDev customer.

Today we had a new client sign up with us and coincidentally they are hosting their website with you.

After speaking to live chat there is no way to create a client account for them under our Whitelabel brand if they already have an account with you.

At the moment this isn’t a problem as the client registered directly on our website but what happens when we do move over to The Hub, how will we handle customers that happen to already be WPMUDev customers?

Something to think about perhaps?

Live chat suggested asking them to create a team member so we can access their account, but that wouldn’t really work, ideally, we need them to create an account with us so we can bill them using The Hub.

Thoughts?

    Well there you go! It’s finally happened!

    I was expecting it to take a while longer, given that our hosting is basically directed at web developers like you, but here it is.

    Right now, as you can imagine, this is a super complex thing because it requires essentially changing an entire user type into another user type and all associated things with it… in short we could do it but it’d take ages and distract from some of the major things we are building for you.

    If the team member solution doesn’t work I think I’d suggest moving the site to your hosting account, the client then stopping becoming a member with us (hey, they’d save money!) and then you adding them with a new email (or email variable) as a client of yours… I’m pretty sure our team could help manually.

    Not ideal, I know, but you’re the first one… I think this is something we’d seriously do once we have a bit of a window for it or if this starts to happen a lot (I bet it won’t), whichever comes first.

    Adding a bit more info. If your primary concern is the following:

    there is no way to create a client account for them under our Whitelabel brand if they already have an account with you.

    You should be able to add them to your WPMU DEV account as Clients. In general, a WPMU DEV member can be a client of another WPMU DEV member as well. And the process is usual i.e. Invite them as Client to your Clients & Billing, they’ll receive an invite, and since they are already a member they don’t need to create a password so clicking on the invite link activate them as your client. You should be able to bill them normally.

    Now, if you also want to manage their site (hosted with us) under your Hub, then there are only two possibilities as shared above by others:
    – You get yourself added to their Hub as team member so you can collaborate on their site
    – Move their site to your Hub and ask them to cancel the membership with us

    However, if you only wanted to add them to your Hub as Clients and bill them without adding the existing site (hosted with us) under your Hub, that’s already possible.

    I hope this clarifies things a bit more.
