[The Hub] Website Group Management

5

Having customisable Groups to help manage websites and set access on a Team level would be useful.

Note: Labels are very limited in functionality and don’t appear to sync between team members (what’s the actual point of them?)

My clients are web agencies that manage portfolios of 20-100+ websites each. Having Groups labelled as their agency name would be useful for overall management.

Creating A New Group:

Add > New Group > Input Group Name
Add Team Members To Manage Group

Group A – John’s Agency
Group B – Stacey’s Agency
Group C – Bob’s Agency

– Team member Joe can only manage Group A
– Team member Marie can only manage Group B
– Team member Troy can manage Group A, B and C
– Client John can View only Group A (John’s Agency).

When a new Website is added, to ask which Group to assign the website to when on-boarding.

Custom Configs:

Custom Configs can then be applied on a Group level – e.g. one client may 50 websites and be paying for daily backups + Security. So a config to Group A is applied across all 50 websites to backup daily. Any new websites will automatically receive all of the same configs.

On the other hand, the client for Group B is only paying for Uptime monitoring, so all of their websites have a config automatically set for uptime monitoring only.

Groups + Configs can work in so many ways.

Branding / Branda:

It would be great to have branding set at a Hub level. When matched with Groups, you could have custom branding set for each Group.

For instance, I sent white-label reports on behalf of my agency client’s to their client’s. By having branding assigned to Groups + Reporting, I could add their agency logo to the reports.

Groups + Custom Configs + Branding have a lot of potential.

Hey Nathan Bowd great feedback, and thanks for the requests!

Would making labels work for team members be a quick fix in some respect?

I think that your construct regarding groups and team member access is really nice and makes a lot of sense for any agency (or meta agency, like yourself) and I’m adding in Mukul Chawla to get his perspective.

I should note that we have considered this, at length, in the past too but it never hurts to revisit!

re: custom configs for groups, that wouldn’t be hard with the access controls you are describing.

re: Branda / reports / centralized management, absolutely – you’ll find throughout the rest of the year that we are centralizing and ‘service-ising’ as much of your work as we possibly can – with a view to being a better reseller and business management platform for you.

Also welcome to WPMU DEV… you’re basically our ideal customer, great to have you here :)

    Cheers, James

Thanks for your prompt response, James! I appreciate it. I’m excited to hear that the additional centralised management features will be rolling out across the year. That will save a lot of time.

Yep, if labels were identical across all team members I think I could make that work for the moment.

I’m also glad you like my groups concept too. If you ever consider diving deeper into the feature, I’d be more than happy to provide any additional ideas/feedback.

I’m looking to migrate around 250 websites off a competing service onto yours. I’ve so far found wpmudev much more sleek and intuitive, so am looking forward to seeing the future of where your service goes.

No problem, working with members is one of my favourite parts of the job :)

We’ll look into labels / team members right now and get stuck into groups as we go.

Will update this ticket too with any questions / feedback – and, as ever here at WPMU DEV, if any other members find this interesting feel free to jump in!
