Two newbie multi-db questions

First, when should I consider this? I’m guessing that since I expect to have less than 10 blogs, I don’t need multi-db, but is that true? Would I be better off starting off from scratch using multi-db? My tendency is to keep the number of not-needed-now plugins down, but you guys will know better than me about this.

Also, if I have 10 blogs now, but I expect that, say, in a year I might open registration and go to 100 or 500 blogs, should I set up with multi-db now so everything’s consistent, or wait until I actually have a big ol’ pile of blogs?

Thanks!

The key thing is to ask yourself how many blogs you honestly expect to have (ambitions / dreams put to the side). If you expect to have 500+ then go ahead and get Multi-DB up and running. If you honestly don’t think you’ll have more than 10-20 over the next couple of years then I wouldn’t bother.

    Thanks,

Honestly, I doubt it. We really intend to try moving our five online magazines and three supporting sites over to one WPMU installation and two other blog/sites to the other WPMU installation (one’s for a commercial company, one’s for a nonprofit, so they need to be separate installations).

The idea of adding lots more blogs wasn’t even part of a plan, just a "hey, if we decide" sort of thing. But, honestly, we’ve got more than enough to do before we start trying to host other peoples’ blogs. Like sleep.

    Thanks! Great advice.

    On this point.

You suggest waiting to say 500. Does that mean if i generate 16 databses, im covered for 16 X 500?

I think i will hit 500 but not 100% sure.

Is it ok to wait until I hit 500 until i need to multi db?

Incorrect. I said ‘If you expect to have 500+ then go ahead and get Multi-DB up and running’.

Basically if you plan on having more than five hundred blogs you should go ahead an get Multi-DB going.

I never said anything about 500 blogs being the max a db can take or to wait until 500 blogs

You can wait as long as you need/want to. We didn’t switch Edublogs to Multi-DB until around 35K blogs. I’d never wait that long to move a site to Multi-DB again though

    wow, thats alot.

is there a sweet spot though?

personal opinion time, i wont hold you liable, promise:

i have a new site, no idea how big its going to get. how long would you wait before implementing? 500? more? less?

There’s no ‘sweet spot’. The more blogs you have the more time it’ll take you to switch over to Multi-DB. So if you plan on having a fair number of blogs then I’d just go ahead and get Multi-DB running.

That’s entirely up to you really. See my response above.
