[Updates] Plugin updates alerts

1

I’d like to see two changes regarding your plugin updates:

A) Every time you release a plugin update we receive an alert on the Hub to let us know that there is a pending update. When we click on the alert, it gets us on the Plugins page in order to update it. There’s nothing wrong with that but I’d like to read the full changelog when I press the alert.

Right now I have to open a site and find the update there in order to view the changelog. Since many or most of us use Automate to update our sites, I think it makes sense to read the changelog when we click on the alert.

B) As a developer, I’d like to learn more about the changes that you’ve made in your updates. Please include what exactly you have changed in the changelog. Some times we need to know about the changed files and if the update fixes our problems.

For example, I manage a large site that can’t get backed up by Snapshot. Your next update seemingly fixes some stability issues. I’d like to know what exactly you have changed in order to figure out if this fixes my issue.

    Hi Isidoros Rigas

I hope you’re well today and thank you for sharing this feedback!

As for point 1, I think everything’s crystal clear so I’ve already passed this suggestion to our Hub Team to look into.

But about point 2 – what kind of additional/detailed information do you think would be useful/should be included there?

I understand that what we share may sometimes be slightly “cryptic” (I’m not quite sure but I think it might be a consequence of how automated deployment tools work; but don’t take my word on it) but I’m wondering – would it be enough to just add a short “description” paragraph to each point in changelog or there’s a need for some more “extensive” explanation and/or references to some code changes?

If you know of some other (like e.g. 3rd-party plugins) changelogs that you think could serve as a good example/model of how ours should work, please share. It could be a great inspiration!

    Best regards,
    Adam

      Hello Adam,

      Thank you.

Regarding point 2, I’d like to learn more about the issues that you fixed. For example, recently you released an update for some of your plugins for an XSS vulnerability. The official change log didn’t specify what fixes it included – I had to open a ticket to find out what exactly you have fixed.

A perfect example of a detailed changelog is WordPress itself. Take a look here:
      https://wordpress.org/support/wordpress-version/version-5-9-3/

It’s perfect because it lists aaall the changes but I’d be happy if you only included the “Summary” section.
