wp-content/mu-plugins folder question

In your manual, where it discusses setting up the multisite network in wp. One of the last steps is to create a new directory folder in wp-content folder. It states to create new directory named “mu-plugins” before you can add the plugins.

What does that folder do?

What happens if the multisite is ALL set up, working, has plugins installed, BUT that mu-plugins folder HAS NOT been created?

What happens if the above exists, and THEN you create that mu-plugins folder?

Only a couple of the plugins have been activated, and there are no sites added to the network yet.

Thanks,

Tom

    Greetings Tom,

Thank you for the great question.

Not to worry the mu-plugins folder was deprecated a while back and is no longer necessary. Similar to the same what happened to the blogs.dir folder with the coming of WP 3.5

So the blogs.dir folder isn’t needed anymore either?

The manual that teaches about setting up the multisite needs to be updated.

Also, the instructions for doing the wildcard dns isn’t correct either. I had to quit a process getting that all figured out.

If people are setting up sub-directory structure, that’s all fine and easy, but if you want real sub-domains, that’s not hard either, once you KNOW what to do.

    Greetings Tom,

Thank you for the additional question.

So the blogs.dir folder isn’t needed anymore either?

Not on fresh brand new MultiSite installations.

But do not delete this on other pre-existing installations or it is possible to lose unrecoverable data and definitely hose your site.

The manual that teaches about setting up the multisite needs to be updated.

I will look into that and also let @Timothy know so we can see who should adjust them.

Also, the instructions for doing the wildcard dns isn’t correct either.

Where are you referring to? Regarding the wildcard DNS instructions?

    Please advise.

    Cheers, Joe
