WP+WPMU is coming out soon, Any effect to the existing WPMU?

I heard eventually WP is scheduling to be integrated with WPMU, there is a rumor that there will be no further development on WPMU. I need a clarification on this so that i can know how to proceed with my existing WPMU project. Thank you

    Hiya,

First up, we don’t actually have a date for this. So it may not be “soon”. A lot of people are saying it will happen in WP 3.0 which is months away. 2.8 is just now getting released.

So for now it’s best to just keep going as you had planned before you heard the news. When the time comes to switch to the merged version there will definitely be a proper upgrade routine for existing WPMU sites. All of our plugins will also be updated to work on the merged version. So there’s really no reason to worry.

    Thanks,

    Andrew

Do remember though of course Matt has said one thing and either years later we’re still waiting or he’s changed his mind and is hoping no one will remember.

The theme marketplace, the “what’s free of wp.com will remain free” statement which he then ignored when it was pointed out they had changed their policy on private blogs and made them pay for large numbers, hyperdb being able to handle split databases like mutlidb here does that took him 18 months to get out after he said publicly it was already in there, the css editor that we’re asked for for three years only to say he’s never heard the requests, the domain mapping code, the aksimet server code, etc….

I think it;s going to be a support nightmare. There are many folks on the wp forums that will not touch the wpmu code.

I’d go on but I’m a couple of days behind right now on stuff….

I think they’ll go through with the merge but if I had to guess I’d say it will be near the end of this year or early next year. WP 3.0 seems to be the target version and they’re just now releasing 2.8. 2.9 will focus on under the hood stuff so will probably take a while to get out as it’s easier to add new features than tweak a ton of code for efficiency. So I think we’ll see 2.9 sometime between September and October. So 3.0 will probably be released in November, December or January.

    Thanks,

    Andrew

    Let’s try this again:

Someone commented elsewhere that the mu specific hooks are already being merged into the wp code.

One other thing. All these hosts that won’t host wpmu and those that won’t add in a wildcard: I wonder what’s going to happen if and when the codes merge. I wonder if we’ll see more “no wordpress” hosts.

Yep, they’ve already merged in a few bits. However, they have *a lot* more work to do so it will definitely be a few months at the earliest.

I think that’s going to be a “wait and see”.

    Thanks,

This is exciting and scary. I love the WPMU specific plugins. I can see how they might want to merger though. With BuddyPress, they can offer blogging and social networking from one package.

PS> REALLY nice redesign! I love it. Much easier to login and get around.
